Lower Shift Cable Bell Housing Thread Size?

Thanks for measuring that. I did unscrew the old one but we went on vacation and right before, I threw a bunch of stuff away, including that! Doh! I did end up getting this one in but it was a tough install - I'm really hoping I didn't strip the threads going in but it looked centered on...

Lower Shift Cable Bell Housing Thread Size?

You guys have been helping me out on a back-end rebuild of my 1985 Mercruiser 120 and I've run into some problems with the lower shift cable. I ordered a replacement lower shift cable that's supposed to fit R / MR / Alpha One Gen 1, which is what my outdrive assembly is. The issue is that the...

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

It's very visible bent but i didn't notice until i tried to put the new u joint in. I couldn't get it, then i realized it was bent. I think it bent while pulling out the old u joints. They were all pretty tough to get out with a press. I'm sure they were original. Then I'm sure i bent them...

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

Well I ran into a problem putting my new U-joints in. The yoke assembly bent - I'm guessing when I took the old ones out. I didn't realize it so when I put the new U joints in, it bent even more. From what I understand, it should probably be replaced. Is it possible to get this at an auto...

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

Yes there is a gap. The pitch on the bell housing doesn't exactly match the pitch on the bushing. I tightened it as far as i could with a nut and threaded rod then lightly tapped it to try and get it all the way in. When i look at it, part of the bushing is touching the housing. I'll try and get...

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

Can you confirm that I've installed the shift shaft bushings/seal correctly? If i understand your post above, the top bushing/fitting has the seals in it and the bottom fitting is just the bushing - no rubber seals or anything. Is that correct? Here is a photo of what i did:

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

Thanks for the kind words Paintman! I'm thinking about spraying the yoke end and coupler with rust reformer since I have some laying around. Any reason for / against doing that?

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

Thought I'd give you guys a quick update since you've been so helpful. I've got pretty much everything off and torn apart. I was able to get the lower shift cable nut out by soaking it in PB blaster and using a 9/16 socket and breaker bar as recommended by you guys above. Also, against Jonny...

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

Sorry for the late response - thanks for the tips and video! I've already ran into that shift arm set screw - wouldn't budge. In order to get the bell housing off I ended up sawzalling through the shift cable - definitely overkill but it worked. I'll be dealing with that shift arm towards...

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

I did look into the exhaust shutter flaps and I'm going to grab those as well - also fairly inexpensive it looks like. Now if I could just find out what happened to the other one - hopefully that one is still attached.

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

You guys are awesome! You all have got me convinced to just do it right and get the back end rebuilt. I'm going to get the shift shaft bushing / seal. It looks like I don't necessarily need the little tool based on some videos I watched so I'm going to skip that for now. Can I reuse that...

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

Thanks for the suggestion - forgot to say in my OP that the first thing I did was change the lower unit oil. It looked good and I had replaced a lot of the gaskets recently so I think that should be all set. That's a heckuva a list and I have already purchased quite a few of those parts. I...

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

Thanks for the responses! The drive has never been pulled as far as I know so I'll probably just pull it and replace the gimbal bearing. As far as water intrusion, should I replace anything else as well? I saw a youtube video where a guy replaced the seal behind the bearing as well. I'm sure...

    Gimbal Bearing Noise?

Hey all, It's been a while since I've posted but hoping you can help me ID a noise I'm having. First of all, it's a Mercruiser 120 from the mid-80's. Usually when it's running, there is a low purr and it sounds like you'd expect. When I finally got it out on the water, I'm noticing a loud...

Weird starting issue: Usually it turns over and starts but not always...

I have a 120hp Mercruiser i/o. I kept both batteries (deep cycle and starting batter) on a trickle charge throughout winter. I should mention that I also installed an ACR and a dual circuit battery switch last summer. For some reason, sometimes my boat will turn over and run just fine and other...

Boat won't properly load onto trailer

I have a mid-80's 16.5' fish and ski on a Spartan trailer - I'm pretty sure it's the original trailer the boat came on. For some reason it always loads unevenly onto the trailer - If looking at the front of the boat, the boat is always shifted up to the right. While loading, it appears it's...

Moving lights over to deep cycle battery?

I did check out the lights wiring diagram sticky but I could not make sense of it (I'm terrible at reading those things). Basically, I have everything set how I would like as far as what is powered by the starting battery vs. the deep cycle battery - I just have one more minor issue. I...

Neptune EX120 trolling motor - Forward & Off but no reverse

I decided to throw a topic out there on this; it kind of got buried in another topic of mine and I was hoping someone may be able to help. I have an old Neptune EX120 - engine mounted trolling motor. While forward (with variable speed) and off work, when I flip it in reverse, nothing...

Adding a deep cycle battery to a mid-80's fish and ski

Hey there, So I recently purchased a boat from my grandfather and I have a couple questions on getting the electronics setup how I would like them. First of all, I assume it makes sense to keep all of the accessories on a deep cycle battery and isolate the starting battery for starting only...
