    F115 Yamaha no trim

I have a 2006 F115 Yamaha outboard on the pontoon boat I bought two years ago. I need help diagnosing a trim problem. Here are the facts: The engine appears to be trimmed fully down. The trim gauge indicate well above the UP position. When I press the down trim button (throttle or on engine)...

    fuel mileage

Consider this food for thought. The rule of thumb is that a typical outboard burns about one gallon per hour for every ten horsepower produced. If you are running near WOT for an hour, you'll burn about 5-6 gallons. If it takes you about an hour to travel seven miles to the sand bar, that is...

    22 dlx 90 hp mercury 4stroke

Top speed for a boat is determined by the maximum power output of the engine (usually at WOT), the total drag on the boat (water and wind), and the efficiency of the propeller in converting the power of the engine into thrust to propel the boat. If the propeller has too little bite on the...

    14mph speed

ahicks makes good points and I'd like to expand on one of them. Suppose a boat engine makes peak horsepower at 5500 RPM and the boat is setup to reach maximum speed at that RPM when conditions are ideal. If you take that boat out on a day when there is a 5 MPH headwind, the extra drag may...

    14mph speed

Are you comparing tachometer RPM from last year to now? What were they? Here's the basic science. Top speed is determined by the maximum power output of the engine and the total drag (water and wind) of the boat. The propeller allows you match the point where your engine produces its maximum...

Needing help 1993 40hp Mercury higher rpm issues

At first glance your engine does not appear to be mounted too high. Most folks start with the anti-ventilation plate (just above the propeller) about even with the bottom of the engine pod that supports the transom. When underway, the anti-ventilation plate should be a couple inches below the...

Suzuki df140hp on our pontoon question

    Speed/HP boost for towing kiddos

I believe 2-3 MPH would be noticeable, but it won't be enough for the teens you'll have in a few years. ... I love having a family activity that all the kids enjoy doing. I think you'll want to upgrade to a bigger/faster boat in a few years. Prices are really high right now, so I suggest you...

    Speed/HP boost for towing kiddos

In theory a 40% increase in applied power will yield an 18% increase in top speed. That is likely 2-3 MPH in your case. ... The most practical things you can do to increase speed are to decrease weight and aerodynamic drag. For example, leave excess adult passengers on shore and take down the...

    Replace plywood decking on pontoon

Use marine grade plywood. .... Pressure treated wood is soaked in a chemical that reacts with aluminum and ordinary steel and can cause serious corrosion problems. I have no comment regarding the fiberglass idea.

    18' pontoon prop?

With 5-15 MPH winds, it make a big difference whether you are going into or with the wind. When you can get a calm wind speed with your usual load, note your WOT RPM. If it is less than 5500, you may get some benefit from a different prop. Take your data and visit the Mercury Prop Selector...

    Tube pulling?

If it were mine, I wouldn't pull a Big Mable from a cleat. If there is an eye on the back of the log, I'd use that. But my first choice would be to pay for a proper harness I could pick up locally and figure out what to do with the other one later.

    older crest pontoon steering cable

Admittedly my experience with consoles and steering is very limited (two), but I can't imagine how a person could install steering into a console without being able to access the inside. I'm betting on some kind of hidden access panel or hidden screws.
