71 johnson 135 idle advance less than 5 deg

I checked the idle advance while on the flushette. I cant get 5 degrees advance, that revs the motor too much with the throttle completely closed. Is that just a ballpark recommendation or is there something wrong(like it should be in gear in the water)? Thanks

Add Tilt trim to 73 johnson 135??

Now that this motor runs right, I'd like tilt and trim. Can you order a retrofit kit or bolt the engine to a later model mount? When I first got this engine, I thought the tilt bar that you can manually swing up into place while lifting the lower unit from behind the moter was for either towing...

    quick question timing light.

My auto timing light is not bright enough to use during the daylight. Should any auto timing light work and be easily seen in full sun mechanicing? Do I need a special timing light?

Need springs for choke solonoid 73johnson135

Per my local omc dealers(2) these springs are no longer available(one in solonoid, one on top of plunger). Anybody have these uninstalled in brand new condition? Thanks

    Hey Pst76

You had the same start problem as I with your 115. Check to see if the choke flappers open slightly DURING the crank. Hold them closed while your wife cranks and see if it solves your problem.

    normal choke function 73Johnson135

Joe, Dhadley, Clanton, others that know<br />Do ya'll notice some choke flapper opening because of the suction airflow forcing them open slightly when cranking as a normal condition on these v4's?

    Rebuilding harness 73johnson135V4

Now that I think I'm going to be able to get this motor to run right, I am thinking of replacing or building a new harness. Are these available new? Are there kits for this?

    73johnson135 crank vacuum test

I've posted about this motor. I want to see if what the carbs see is adequate suction while cranking to get enough fuel into the cylinders to start adequately. I am thinking I can hook a vacuum gauge to a flat aluminum plate and duct tape that plate to the 2 barrel carb intake or even take carbs...

    Neighborhood etiquitte

Thought I'd run this one by ya'll. I'm around the 1/2 century mark, and my neighbor is about 30, and always calls me "sir" (some 3 years now). I find myself taking offence at this though I've said nothing. I guess I'm not ready to be seen as "Mr. Wilson" yet. Next time he calls me sir I'm...

Freed Iraquis riding on American Tanks

What a picture on TV and Aljezeera(sp) and throughout the Muslim world. I chuckled at Katie just now. She has a deer in the headlights surprized look at this which seems to be saying saying " hey , this might be good for our relations with the Arab world" . There is going to be a lot of egg on a...

Timing for h comp engns w unleaded gas

I have a 73 135 hp v4. Considering that we all use unleaded and these engines were designed for unleaded, what numbers should these engines be timed for? My service manual specifies 5 degrees advance at idle(I presume idle in the water in gear at 650 rpm) and 4300 to 4600 rpm in gear at 22...

    Engine Freshwater flush idea

ref 73 johnson 135 hp v4. <br />For my neighbors sakes, I hate starting this motor up on peaceful Sunday afternoons after boating in salt water, smelling up the place at high decibels, running till the thermostats open to flush the heads. I have noticed 2 rubber hoses accessible with the cover...

I have been plagued by poor idle start problems with this engine.<br /><br />It runs great everywhere else, and I thought with some running time it might begin to idle better. rpms are 700 at idle immersed, and 1000 on the muffs. I have triple checked spark, with a spark tester and get good...

Connecting 2 fuel tanks, draw from both?

I'm thinking I can connect a fuel line from the connections of 2 6 gal portable fuel tanks and tee off that line to draw from both simultaneously. Seems like it would auto level and draw from the most full tank. Does anybody do this or know why not to?

    Replaced vernatherm of thermostat system

I replaced the vernatherm on a 73 135hp Johnson V4. Actually turned out to be an easy job, the old one was frozen, and the cyl temps have gone from room temp to almost but not too hot to keep your fingers on. Is this a good field test of proper thermostat function? How hot should the cylinder...

    Unregulated charge, 73 135hp v4 Johnson

I tested out the boat Sunday, after adding instruments and a new rectifier to the engine. I was alarmed to see the voltage peg to max at some 16vdc. When I would stop, shutdown, and restart I would find it at 14 for a while, then soon it peged back to max voltage. Questions are:<br />1) what is...
