    First boat , yes.-----Make sure you have a boat in seaworthy condition.----Then and only then worry about a motor.-----Your motor may be easy to inspect / refurbish / rebuild and good used motors are easy to find.

    And you should be able to install a wee fuel pump and run with a 5 gallon tank.----Spot to mount the pump is there already.

    By using the jumper you have bypassed the function of the ignition switch.-----No need to turn the key and push it in at all.----

    2009 Evinrude 130hp G1 lower unit

    On my opinion those lower units are not robust.----Look into fitting an older ( 1985 to 1998 ) one .----Might need to swap out the upper driveshaft and shift rod.-----A V-6 lower unit might also fit and be strong.

    In my opinion the testing is easy.----But if you insist find a new control box with a red plug.-----Many are listed on E-BAY.

    There is no difference ( other than looks ) between the older boxes and the newer ones.-----They work the same and are interchangeable.

    When it is cold , crank it over with sparkplugs in.----Can spark jump a gap of at least 3/8" on a proper spark tester , yes or no ?
