2000 Merc 135 carb help requested

I presume your idle mixture is adjustable? Merc carbs usually do not have accelerator pumps, and as such the idle mixture need to be a bit richer. So, richen it 1/8 turn on a single carb throat (top carb first) and see if she accelerates better. If so, repeat with the other throat, and...

Is it spinning in the correct direction? If the magnets are installed upside down, the starter can spin in the wrong direction.

New study on tow boat environmental impact

Gee, I think it is crap. Waves churn up the bottom during storms as well as on normal days. You heard about all those boats flipping or sinking in Lake Tahoe, when the wind blew up unexpectedly. Was the bottom of the lake unaffected? For several years, along the Island beach portion of the...

    Let's talk skill...

One thing to remember is that different boats often handle differently, even if they look similar. So get some practice with the boat, to make docking easier.

How/where do I find part numbers?

Fuel senders are pretty universal. It should be easy to find a replacement. Tank height is usually the only variable, and there are ones that can be cut to the correct size. Other hull parts are not universal, so you need to get measurements etc., and match something up.

    safety lanyard attachment

Yes, it looks like the safety lanyard is pushing the key in to the choke position, but it is not. Install the lanyard start and run the motor, to assure yourself that the choke is not activated.

    02 mercury 40hp 2 stroke power trim pump -

I bought an aftermarket PTT unit for my '93 V6. No issues in several years, heck, I had to replace the PTT motor on it already. Not sure why some of your PTT units are so cheap. The aftermarket I bought was $900 or so.

    1986 Mariner 150 Info?

I am sure that there are torque values for the waterpump bolts, which are 1/4" bolts, however, I never used them. The waterpump is plastic. Make the bolts snug but overtightening them will crack the pump.

Can someone tell me what the plugs/wires are for on my 98 evinrude 90HP? See attached

Those are close but not exact to my 1998 90HP60*V4 service manual wiring diagram. So here are some educated guesses. First picture: wiring for dashboard remote control PTT switch (green/white, blue/white). and (Beige/white) PTT gauge. Second picture: Alarm wires for overheat, low oil, no...

    Fuel filter separator

Normally the primer bulbs are on the engine side of the filter. You would need two primer bulbs, one for each engine. Without any shutoff valves, one motor could pull fuel out of the other motor's fuel line.

question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

You can always make a new boat wiring harness. Measure the wire gauge of the old harness and buy some wire to match. Cut the wires and using different color electrical tape, wrap the new wire ends for identification. Your motor likely has red for battery, black ground, black/yellow for spark...

    Let's talk skill...

Gee, unlike parking a car, a boat is subject to wind and current. so, figure out which is strongest and use it to help you. I will refer to the strongest as the boat's drift. If the boat will drift into the dock, plan to come to a stop parallel to it and let the drift push you to the dock...

question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

Gee, those look like battery cables. If that is all that is wrong with the boat harness, new ones can easily be spliced in. Usually it is the quick connect that goes bad.

    Fuel filter separator

The unused port needs to be sealed. The plugs are usually tapered, so tighten them a bit, or carefully us some teflon tape in the threads. Make sure no teflon tape gets into the filter or lines. The filter is a real PIA to prime using a primer bulb. Fill it with fresh fuel, before attaching...

    Automatic trim tabs

Hydraulic trim tabs are adjustable, and much better IMO. They can really help stern heavy boats, or underpowered boats. The auto ones retract under water pressure, always causing drag. This drag reduces fuel economy and performance. So, with hydraulic trim tabs, and when the fatties are in...
