    4.3 Vortec Harmonic Balancers...

Either balancer will be fine. I'd take a used auto motor over a marine any day. Marine engines are driven much harder than auto, and that doesn't even count the (usual) open cooling corrosion and generally harder environment/op conditions

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Imma channel my inner @Scott Danforth here and say... Rebuild your original

    Pumping out oil from dipstick

Best thing I did when I replaced my engine. Changing that filter would be a nightmare on this engine

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Ok at this point I'd check the vacuum again... That bouncing would make me think a valve isn't seating. Confusing at this point... Your compression and leak down look good now

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Yeah, that's why I suspect his numbers are wrong. A 104 psi is leaking a lot from somewhere, right?...shouldn't have normal leakdown numbers. If you can't build good compression, you're by definition not sealing the chamber well.

For those thinking about an engine swap...

What vintage 4.3 did you go with? What's your WOT rpm? You should have at least had to reprop if you kept the old drive.

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Did I miss the part where those compression #'s were addressed? 14mm is still poor vacuum. I can't tell if my video is laggy or if that's the motor, but it looks like your vacuum is low, fluctuating, AND having a sharp drop (HG, rings, burnt/sticky valves?). And your leakdown test numbers are...

    Mercruiser Vacuum Gauge

I hooked a vacuum gauge up when I was initially tuning my carb. Never took it off. It's helpful for setting idle, can give you a warning if you have valve problems. In combination with my a/f gauge I can tell when I go from lean-->rich on my carb rods, and also what spring strength I should be...

winterizing a mercruiser 3.0 with sterndrive kept in water year round

Any reason not to just pull the plugs every time? I can drain the blocks and manis on the 4.3 in about 30 minutes (most of the time spent remembering where the drains are). If I was doing it regularly I'd put in a few ball valves and do it in a minute.

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

Wow. My '02 330 had 235k on the original clutch when sold, truck was replaced at 215k

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

Mini cooper @85k has the clutch slipping already. I bought it at 55k and do almost no city driving. Apparently it's dual mass: paper mache and dreams/bubble gum

    First Aid Kit

I honestly can't think of anything in a first aid kit that would be of use during the hour it would take to get home . I have rags and duct tape, you can always improvise a splint or tourniquet . Tourniquet would be the only thing that would possibly be life or death. Anything else is just to...

    Trim pump wiring acting opposite

Nice to get the wiring correct so you don't totally confuse the next guy. Especially when you're the next guy and don't remember what you did

    Working During Winter

Wouldn't work (maybe, there's been heated discussion about this over the years) because impeller (maybe) wouldn't pull water from the trash can. It would be interesting to submerge it and pull the supply hose to the engine and see if you're getting flow. Otherwise on what af you're using, 50/50...

    Mercruiser 470 voltage regulator smoking

    Whoa, $750! That's crazy for a $100 alt and a bracket. I think I paid less than ½ from breezeworks .

    Used Boat Lift question

Also, age of the motors is completely irrelevant. No hour meter on them. Salt water/corrosion? Only parts to wear are the bearings, and no way to tell the condition of the windings I don't think.

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

A kludge fix worries me in these cars because I have no idea if I'm going to **** off a computer. (Just what do you think you're doing Dave? )

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

Wow, same problem after battery died on mine. No a/c. Trying to decide if I should buy a new/used one (and take the dash apart to swap out) or try to reflash it (if that's possible)
