    Take the cowling off the motor and find the positive wire coming in from the battery. It should have in inline fuse holder. It almost look like a connector. There should be if I remember right a twenty amp fuse in it. That is more than likely blown.

    I would take apart and clean all the connections from the battery to the motor. A loose or faulty connection in the system can cause high voltage. I had the same problem last year and found the negative post connection was loose. A 15 minute job and no dollars spent.

    Compresion gt 200

    I had a 1990 GT175. After a complete rebuild it showed right around 91 on all six with my gauge. These are not a high compression motor from what I was told. Ran perfect for ten years or so until I sold it last year.

    Like was said you risk damage to the rectifier or charging circuit is it is run without a battery in the system. I think the wire to ground out the ignition in those older Mercurys was orange. I know it was in my 1976.
