Mercruiser Sterndrive Gear Oil Leaking by Prop

Good news is that the seals in the upper are much easier to replace than the prop shaft. With a gen 1 you can pressure test the halves separately and see where you're leaking. I wouldn't mess with the input shaft seal, but I'm sure others would. It's not a bad job if you have an earlier style...

    Early EZ Shift outdrive questions

That snapped bolt should just pull out, or drive it out from the outside. No threads in the housings. At that point nothing but 40 years holding it on.

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

    I need a tool, don't know what it's called...

I'm looking for a cylindrical wire go/no-go type feeler gauge. To measure tiny holes. Would normally use drill bits for this type of thing, I need metric, range of about 1-3 mm in 0.1-0.2mm increments. Not sure how to even search for it, but I'm assuming it exists. "pin gauge" is the closest...

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

What do you mean by "bottoms out"? Binding is an entirely different thing, if that's what's happening.

    Chattering in out drive

And tbh we don't get a lot of feedback from those that have just replaced the upper, so I'd love to hear a long term update

'98 Stingray 190LX 4.3 Merc Stuck in Muck Issue

The accelerator pump is activated by the throttle cable, not the shift cable. Please elaborate on what you're calling "run" position. That is different than "start" position.

    replace or rebuild merc carbs

That's basically paying $300 for a carb rebuild. Which is fine, but if you're going to pay someone you'd probably be better off having someone local do it.

    Water in Bellows

I've had it happen, but my boat was pretty much submerged (and I think my shift cable is experiencing delayed effects 😔)

    Chattering in out drive

Great info, please post the details. Also, common wisdom is that your drive is going to grenade since you didn't rebuild the lower. Keep us updated...

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

Nobody knew that because it's wrong. The tool absolutely has to go into the coupler. Full stop. That's literally the whole point.
