How do you guys mix Gas

Gee, oil will not mix well if it concentrated in the bottom of a fuel tank. It mixes very well if the tank is mixed a few gallons at a time. So figure out how many gallons your fuel tank will take, error margin is 3 gal. Let's pretend you think the tank has 24 gallons to be filled. Divide...

    Motor needs help.

Gee, it takes a lot to make the powerhead bolts non removeable. Put a good box or open end wrench on 'em and try it. If the studs come out, OK. If they break, that's OK too. If you need to split the nuts, that works as well.

    Need some help fellas !!

If you do want to start it without a battery, the charging system will likely get damaged. I would install a battery, to prevent that. The battery can be no good, but it's connection (and load on) the charging system will prevent damage.

Fuel vent cap closed or open when running the boat?

Are you talking about the vent on the cap of a portable fuel tank? Those need to be left open when the engine is running and closed when in storage.

    Motor needs help.

    Gee, swap the powerheads.

    98 Johnson leaking hydraulic fluid.

Gee, most of those PTT units must be filled when tilted all the way up. If the cap is opened and the PTT unit is not all the way up, the fluid will run out.

    98 Johnson leaking hydraulic fluid.

Yes, Those PTT units can trap air, and look to be full of fluid. Run the PTT motor up and lift tilt the motor by hand. Get some help, if you can as they can be heavy. Block it up with the manual lock and let her sit with the boat level. Now refill the reservoir, replace the cap and run her...

    bilge problem

What other parasitic drains are on your boat? I have no others on mine. I even wire all accessories thru a master go switch so I do not leave the FF or radio on.

    White smoke?

White smoke is usually steam. Blue smoke is oil, black smoke is fuel. Does it clear up after a few moments?

2001 Mercury Outboard 2 stroke starter issue

I presume the starter is spinning in the correct direction? Doublecheck the battery cables to make sure they are not reversed.

New Fuel Gauge and Fuel Sending Unit, are still not showing any readings?

Gee, If both components are new, the wiring is the likely suspect. The ground on the gauge and the sender needs to be common and not have any resistance between them. The gauge also gets +12VDC and the sender wire. A lot of senders have their own ground lug. Since there is a gasket between...

    Need some help fellas !!

Fuel is premix 50::1 gasoline/oil. A motor that old probably doesn't have an oil injections system, so fuel must be mixed. After you replace waterpump impeller, replace the gear oil, and grease the fittings for tilt and steering. Use a flush device when you start it.

    bilge problem

Gee, Bondo. I run one of those pumps in each of my boats. I never had a dead battery. I think they work real well. I have run pumps with separate float switches. They get a piece of jetsam under the float and run the battery dead. The pumps with built in floats are nice, but the float...

Best type of fuel tank for gas engines?

Fiberglass and gasoline/alcohol are not well suited. The fiberglass can dissolve in alcohol. SS will bust the budget. Aluminum will hold up for 25 years in salt water, longer in fresh. Plastic is forever. Steel tanks are good, but susceptible to rust.

Clicking tilt trim and now blowing fuse ? 50 Mercury 2 stroke

I am pretty sure that a '91 would originally have a 3 wire PTT motor and solenoids. Jumper the PTT motor directly from the battery and see if she turns. If so your wiring or relays/solenoids are suspect. If the motor has a black, third wire, make sure that is grounded well, prior to...

    Cable and Drum steering

Your hydraulic steering should have a spec for turns lock to lock. See if you have the same. Low fluid or defective components could cause more turns in your hydraulic steering. Next check the lock to lock spec for a single cable steering system. If your hydraulic system is working properly...

    Fuel capacity

Expect it to be about 35 Gal. That was pretty typical for boats of that size, in that year. It could be a bit less as well. It makes sense to look at the condition of the fuel tank as well. It is likely aluminum, and if you boat in salt water, it could be near end of life.

1998 Johnson 150 lower mount cover

Gee, I agree with rothfm. Pull the cover as best as you can. Midsections are hardly ever damaged, so salvage yards are full of them. See if you can fix yours. Broken bolts in the cover or steering arm cover can be removed using a pipe wrench. Drilling SS bolts is a problem.

    8-pin cable plug harness

New controls and boat wiring harnesses are not all that expensive, say < $150. Since they are new the wiring to the round plug is molded and waterproof, better that what you can do with a new plug (if you can find one), solder and shrink tube. You might be able to find just a new wiring...

High idle after changing carb bowls J150VXSIG

Check to see that the throttle is closing on the 2nd motor. On a motor similar to yours, I had the throttle linkage hang up once, for no reason I could find. I pushed it closed and it was fine since. just a SWAG.
