Oil leak - Volvo Penta 5.7

I agree with Scott the most likely source is the adapter that’s bolted to the block, that or the oil lines bolted to it.. A rear main seal would be leaking between the oil pan and the bell housing.

Buying an '03 Sea Ray Sundeck 220

Another vote for closed cooling. Right now I’m in the process of extending the block drains with 2 lengths of hose so that I don’t have to pull out the rear seats just to drain the motor. They way I’m doing it they are not tied together & can be rodded out if they don’t drain. That & the remote...

Buying an '03 Sea Ray Sundeck 220

When I had my issue with leaky head gaskets & salt water in the oil I spoke to a few mechanics & both said the same thing water in the oil or even antifreeze will deteriorate bearings & you might not know that there bad till you put a load in it. In my case the water wasn’t in the oil long...

Buying an '03 Sea Ray Sundeck 220

Yep well if it’s been that long then yes that’s the way you may be going. I was able to re hab an engine that had salt water in it but it was only for a few days and multiple oil changes were done….

Buying an '03 Sea Ray Sundeck 220

What about the fiberglass/wood composite structure? These are the most time consuming of all boat repairs so make sure to check those points as carefully as you can. Mechanical repairs are actually far easier & less time consuming than rot repairs…. The engine estimate only says that salt water...

    Pumping out oil from dipstick

If you have a good vac pump and your connection at the female fitting on the hose seals well you can do it that way. Engine had to be warmed up first though.

    Seller says exhaust bellows torn

The average lifespan of OMC/Volvo bellows is 10 years before small cracks start to form, that means the rubber is getting stiff and eventually those small cracks will become big cracks. However this assumes that you used OEM parts and stored the boat with the drive down, both of which correlate...

Need help with winterizing first boat

Also….you will have to be able to get parts of the boat that are in your way out of the way (seats etc) to access the drains especially the block drains those are the worst to get at…. On many of these there is a power steering cooler on the back of the engine to get the water out you disconnect...

Lower Transom Cable Won’t Budge - Stuck in FWD

To the OP it is possible that the cable broke inside the pivot housing and that's why it stayed in FWD this can happen if you don't pull the drive at the end of each season and clean out the area where the shifter bell crank lives inside the pivot housing. Water can leak in around the gasket and...

    Pumping out oil from dipstick

There is no worry about the OP's question, the only vacuum you have to be concerned with is in the oil dipstick tube, you need to have a good gasket on the female fitting and make sure it is tight on the threads of the dipstick tube. I made this up years ago, sucks all the oil out in about 3...

    Fogging thru carburetor

Lol I will probably replace my elbows at the end of next season (5 years in Long Island salt water); the manifolds might be ok to use beyond that, or not… It’s actually easier to manually drain & back fill with AF than trying to suck it up the drive….

    Fogging thru carburetor

In both Merc & even my old OMC shop manual it plainly tells you how to drain and use AF. Doing it that way 20 years not one problem

I wish we could put up a really obvious sticky about the winterizing issue and what not to do!

    4.3 GL-C - Distributor clamp bolt

Ah yes Just like the mandated plugs over mixture screws If I found one of those on my engine it would get thrown far into the woods…

    98-99 4.3 bare block/short block interchange

All these threads about cracked blocks goes to show you..you put in a new or re-man or a salvage from a truck motor do yourself a big favor and either add closed cooling or at least make your engine easier to winterize…I thought up a way to extend the block drains without the draw backs of...

    98-99 4.3 bare block/short block interchange

Check those heads carefully because if the block cracked it’s pretty likely that the heads, intake manifold and exhaust manifolds could be cracked too…

    Power steering actuator repair.

On my Cobra I had to replace the old actuator with a used unit & I just used regular Dexron II auto trans fluid system since that’s probably what it was filled with when new…

    MerCruiser 4.3lx shortblock compatibility?

That would be a great outcome, just make sure to prep the block by cleaning the sealing surfaces & also all the cyl head bolt holes in the block with a thread chaser. You want to make sure that all the head bolts thread in easily so you get proper torque when installing the cyl heads….
