Brake drum and bearing cap questions

The hole is probably to adjust the drum brake shoes not to let water out. The seals could have been leaking a long time & you wouldn’t know unless you pulled the drum to inspect. With drum brakes you can’t see if the seals are leaking like on disc brakes.

procedure to manually flush non-running 4.3 engine?

including mine here’s 6 boats moored behind my house that range in age from 25-35 years old. When I head over to the local gas dock I could take many more prob 25-30.

Water in Oil (Again) Head Scratcher

Water in Oil (Again) Head Scratcher

Well if you found water in the bottom of the manifold after removing the elbow yes but: ideally drain the exhaust first since a full manifold can spill over into the center exhaust passage when you remove the elbow…that way any water you see there was likely due to a leak. Yes it’s savable if...

2013 Volvo Penta 4.3GL Oil Pressure Drop & Valve Tapping / Rattle

I use a Topsider vacuum pump with a garden hose connector, it gets most of the oil out but you still have to be mindful of not overfilling and just keep the stick out for a few min to allow the level to equalize in the tube if you have that design. I wouldn’t be surprised if they give oil...

1990 4.3 block and 1995 heads, which rocker tightening specs to follow?

Yep glad you got it sorted & glad to hear the solution. That’s why I kept my Prestolite points distributor with simple mechanical (centrifugal) advance. No modules to go bad & then have to search for…

'86 4.3L OMC Stringerdrive runs to almost 200°

OMC used a 160* thermostat so that’s just about right. I have those same Medallion gauges and they all still work. 75* C (top scale of numbers) is about 170. Mine never goes over 175 (80*C) as long as all is well. Replace your impeller every 3 seasons and you should be good.

Extra cost(s) breakdown of storing boat in a saltwater marina?

Storage costs if you have an off season. About 15 years ago we had a friend who kept his boat (23’) at a really nice local marina. He must have been thinking this is too expensive so he asked my how much I spent to keep the boat on the mooring. I said “do you really want to know?”… he said yes...

Extra cost(s) breakdown of storing boat in a saltwater marina?

Keeping a boat in a marina is the most convenient but probably the most expensive. I would not DYI bottom paint it is a nasty job with hazardous materials. Some require you to use their people for everything driving up the cost. The costs all depend on location; length of boat, length of season...

procedure to manually flush non-running 4.3 engine?

Agreed. I guess I’m a bit over the top with regular maintenance. Sometimes I felt like I was wasting money taking 6 year old exhaust manifolds to the recycling place. But never had that failure!

    Strange engine sound need help

Your alternator should put out approx 14.2 volts, so I'd check all the connections first including battery, starter, etc to make sure all are clean and not corroded.

procedure to manually flush non-running 4.3 engine?

I’ll get you pix but even then you can’t know if those boats, old as they look were repowered like you can with outboards. A common sight here is a 40 year old Whaler with a shiny new Merc/Yam/Zuk/Honda on the transom. Outboards seem to go 15-20 years before corrosion becomes a problem...

procedure to manually flush non-running 4.3 engine?

If you're in freshwater where are you getting your info about how long raw water cooled engines last in salt? As far as excessive maintenance/repair in salt water here's what I can tell you that I learned from 3 very good salt water mechanics and my own experience: With an I/O you have to do...

procedure to manually flush non-running 4.3 engine?

Are you in salt water or fresh? Before 4 stroke outboards became popular about 1/2 the boats in local harbors here were raw water cooled I/Os. So just so you understand it’s not just my experience just about all the boaters I know all had them, none were new, most 10-15 years old. As long as...
