At least do a compression check on it. That will tell you a lot. BYOB (battery). Why won't he let you start it?

1973 Mercruiser 165 will not start

Yes, trace the wiring but that isn't your only problem if it isn't starting with a 12v jumper. What's connected to the neg of the coil? Disconnect everything but the wire to the points. Actually, first disconnect everything except a jumper. Hook up a plug tester to the coil. Tap the jumper on a...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 Drive Oil Leak

And removing the outdrive is annual maintenance. You'll want to check your alignment (get a tool off of ebay), as well as your gimbal bearing and ujoints. It's also much easier to split the drive when it's off the boat

    1998 3.0 limited RPM

As always, I'd make sure the mechanicals are sound before you go mucking around with the prop. You might be able to find out what size came on that boat new. But I'd at least check compression and timing, make sure your bottom is clean (the boat...), fresh gas, maybe new plugs, make sure you're...

1973 Mercruiser 165 will not start

Not sure of your exact wiring, 8-9 volts may be enough to have it kick, but 3-4 isn't enough to keep it running. First thing is to trace your coil (+) back to your ignition switch and see where you're losing voltage. You should have about 10v with the key on (if you have a resistance wire). You...

89 Rinker Restore: Seeking suggestions for new SBC350

Also, is this fresh water or salt? That aluminum intake may not be right for salt if it's an auto intake.

Mercruiser 5.0 MPI 2013. Crank but no start.

Curious in how you figured this out? Last post indicated that you were getting spark and power to the fuel injectors?

    Understanding Merc Manifolds 3.7

Can't remember off the top of my head what mine looked like, but iirc the gaskets and reservoir are different depending on whether the manifold is cast or aluminum.

    3.7 L 170 188 190 224ci mercruiser

Agreed. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to install one, though if I had a good engine already I'd consider it. The 3.7 only made 190hp with the 4bbl carb, which is pretty rare. Either way you're making new mounts. My 4.3 actually burns less fuel then the 3.7. I'm thinking that the 4bbl is...

    3.7 L 170 188 190 224ci mercruiser

Having just done this, I disagree. All the shortcomings listed are there. I ran the crap out of mine for 12 years without the cam issue. Never blew a hg. Never overheated. Did the alternator fix, which was like $300 and 2 hours. A non issue. The 4.3 is significantly heavier, which makes a big...

Replace or Repair, where to start?

Yes, that's it. Parts that I can see look ok, it looked a bit melted in the other pic. Fitting snug is the most important part, and those bolts apparently tend to snap off when you try to remove them. I'd probably give it a shot, recognizing that it might be an issue...

Replace or Repair, where to start?

No, still not correct. That plastic tube is a guide only. The actual water tube is copper. Plastic tube isn't necessary. But yes, plenty of other plastic to break/melt.

Replace or Repair, where to start?

NO. This is not what I'm talking about, nor what the op is likely looking at. The plastic water tube is a guide only and unrelated to the water pocket cover. The cover is held on with 4 fragile screws. If it's melted, the copper tube won't mate correctly and will suck air. Take a pic looking up...

    Proper Engine Oil Level

Too much is *not* better than too little (at least it isn't good). You're more likely to do damage running a qt high than rubbing a qt low (though you're probably fine either way)

Replace or Repair, where to start?

Look into the upper from the bottom, it's the plastic piece where the copper pipe fits in.

Yeah, he didn't specify. Just so he knows he may or may not need base mode.

Replace or Repair, where to start?

Before you put it back together, check out the water pocket cover in the upper. With that overheat it may be melted as well.
