    Trim/tilt rams: delete?

Actually you didn't go wrong, you're doing it right. A good resto is expensive. I figure over 20 years I've spent approx $4500 on structural repairs, $4500 on an Imron paint job and about $2000 on a top end overhaul and new exhaust system. Do it right the first time.

    Possible hydro lock?

Agreed with cranking the engine over with all plugs out to check for water in cyls. Water in the motor oil takes a while to show up on the dipstick remove the oil fill cap it will show up under the valve cover first. I also would dis-able the ignition system while doing this because you don’t...

    Exhaust flappers

If you have any doubts try to measure the static water line of the boat with it in the water, you need the tops of the elbows to be 12-13” above that. I have those same OMC designed flappers in my Cobra (Volvo simply adapted the whole Cobra transom mount for the SX series) and as long as you...

Merc 5.7, alpha 1 gen2, Rochester marine 4bbl flood gushing up out of bowl/float vent!?!

If you want a good kit, and need tech advice (forum): Cliffs High Performance Despite some negative opinions on Quadrajets because they were standard equipment on many GM cars and the majority of GM muscle cars there is a ton of information on them out there and if you have a good core & not a...

5.7 L 574APARY STARTER PROBLEMS, please help, if possible! Thanks!!

Yep and the faster you get the water out of the oil the better! Could be blown HGs…. Blown intake gaskets will put water in the oil but not in cylinders. Water gets in cylinders from bad head gaskets, cracked head or block or bad exhaust manifolds & elbows. If you wind up finding blown HGs from...

1995 Four Winns Horizon 190 Trailer wheel bearings

Those look like 6 lug hubs, probably with standard bearings. The bearings will have a # stamped on them, if they are good you can just re-pack them but I would fix the brakes. If they are drums you can just replace the backing plates (6 lug hubs will use a 12" brake assembly), if the bearings...

    Volvo penta 4.3 flooding

Are you sure that the float is not rubbing against the float bowl somehow, bent float arm, etc?

    Engine Fire

Either that or a gas leak from a high pressure line or injector. Either way I’d inform VP. There may be other cases & would be good for them to know.

5.7 L 574APARY STARTER PROBLEMS, please help, if possible! Thanks!!

I put an ARCO permenant magnet gear reduction starter in my OMC 4.3. Much better than the old direct drive starters. Light and spins the motor faster and draws less current as well. Well worth the price!

    Engine Fire

Do you think the fire was fuel related or electrical? In any event I’d contact Volvo even if you’re out of warrantee. Hope you have insurance!

New valve cover gaskets and still leaking V6 4.3

That’s a good way to tell if they are warped. Question for those more experienced than I, can you change the plastic ones for the old style tin covers? Mine have NEVER leaked!

Mercruiser 4.3 EFI water intrusion issues

Agree with all of the above. I’m in the same salt water boating areas as you on the Long Island side of the Sound… I had a similar problem past overheat followed by blown head gaskets & water in 2 cyls & oil. Got the water out & changed oil while the boat was still on the mooring and had it...

Intake manifold gasket replacement advice and tips

you lay a mechanic's straightedge across the sealing surfaces and see what's the biggest feeler gauge you can slide in, no more than .003"

How hot is "too hot" for Mercruiser 454 mag temp?

200 degrees is definitely too hot for a raw water cooled system because they are not pressurized and you can get localized boiling in the hotter parts of the cooling system. The stat ratings vary from 140* to 160* depending on the model. If you have a 160 they will run from 160-175 or so. I...

BRP reveals a new style of outboard, Rotax powered, horizontal crankshaft....

Let’s really hope that whoever installs the fast chargers on those docks knows what they are doing….we know what happens when they don’t…. For the majority of boaters on Long Island where I am who are on moorings or on docks without shore power it WILL NOT work….solar? Ok to keep batteries...

BRP reveals a new style of outboard, Rotax powered, horizontal crankshaft....

Electric boats like EVs will only work for that segment of the population that has a dock with shore power. Totally impractical for thousands of moored boats in harbors around the world. The same way EVs won’t work for city dwellers who live in apartments & condominiums. Still some people just...

    1999 Chaparral 2130 SS problem

I don’t think that’s a marine carb. For your engine it would be an Edelbrock 1409….
