Mercury 7.5 HP Motor Refresh (1969 model year)

I got the bottom cowl and the transom/saddle assembly installed today. I'll be waiting on a few replacement parts before doing more, but it is starting to look like an outboard motor again :)

Mercury 7.5 HP Motor Refresh (1969 model year)

I have been trying to sort through the various hardware and fasteners to make sure I get them where they are supposed to go. My bad for not better categorizing during disassembly. I did find 1 or 2 fasteners for the lower cowling that were in the wrong place from a prior re-build, so I got...

Mercury 7.5 HP Motor Refresh (1969 model year)

Well, I could not resist doing the first finish coat (black), which I needed to do before staring to put the rest of the motor together. Engine cover/cowl . . . Lower cowl and skirt Transom bracket Powerhead/Drive shaft housing I used Rustoleum Universal Paint/Primer-in-one. (Gloss...

Mercury 7.5 HP Motor Refresh (1969 model year)

I spend much of New Year's day doing some painting of the various pieces of the motor (and watching football). Here are the pieces/parts with the Zinc Phosphate primer applied. The primer still seems slightly tacky after about 16 hours. I did apply some heat to help with the...

Mercury 7.5 HP Motor Refresh (1969 model year)

New Year's day update . . . Happy 2017 everyone :) I am doing some prep work for painting and continued assembly, taking care of some issues . . . The bottom cowl is 'suspended' from the drive shaft housing using 3 rubberized mounts . . . 2 in the front and 1 in the rear. The front mounts...

    Possible Non-Skid deck solution

I used 24 oz woven roving to create non-skid areas on my fiberglass dinghy that I made a few year back. 18 oz might be OK too. I did give everything a final coat of gelcoat . . .

Mercury 7.5 HP Motor Refresh (1969 model year)

Snowy Day Update: I have been doing a bit more work on assembling the motor and seem to have run into an issue . . . The ignition assembly is supposed to slide down over the top bearing carrier/cover and have enough play to be able to pivot for the timing advance as governed by the throttle...

Came across a BUYER BEWARE situation, wanted to spread the word . . .

On another boating forum, I came across a question asked about an Auto/RV/Boat consignment company, asking if it was legit. After Googling a bit, I came across some other forum threads about the company and its predecessor named companies. . . Looks like people, who have fallen for the scam...

    O'Day Mariner Sailboat Restoration

IDK, but I guess we will find out this weekend. Speaking of this weekend, look at the weather forecast . . . We are going from 18 F to 57 F in 2 days :noidea: Maybe that will separate the hull & Deck :D

    O'Day Mariner Sailboat Restoration

Quick Update: I think I have the transom bonding figured out to a point where I should be able to finally separate the boat 'halves' After scouring the Mariner Web site, I found a couple of pictures that I believe show the area of bonding between the cockpit and the transom internals. There...

    O'Day Mariner Sailboat Restoration

Update . . . I got a new jig saw this morning and did the cutting. Did not take too long, but I made my cut marks a little too deep and took the top of the keel trunk off  Upon inspection, I noticed a strip of brass/bronze that was embedded into the top of the keel trunk...

    O'Day Mariner Sailboat Restoration

Before I start cutting, I took a few pictures from underneath the cockpit sole to see about the clearance around the keel trunk. Good news is that there is a fair amount of clearance at the rear of the keel trunk. As you can see in the picture below, the 'sheet block mounting plate' is at the...

    O'Day Mariner Sailboat Restoration

Yea, I know . . . seriously :) However, my chainsaw is on the fritz right now, so I'll just have to deal with the boat as is. After giving my predicament some thought, I came up with a plan to separate the boat halves without any serious cutting. I do know that serious is a relative term...

    O'Day Mariner Sailboat Restoration

Keel Trunk Update: Well it looks like I am stuck . . . or at least the cockpit is to the keel trunk. I have not been able to make any headway separating the cockpit from the keel trunk. In reviewing the factory pictures from the Stuart Marine web site, it looks like there as an adhesive that...

    O'Day Mariner Sailboat Restoration

Any time that I can use my wrecking saw is a good thing . . . Today I separated the starboard side rail using the saw and it went much faster than removing the staples as I had done previously. There was a little bit of CSM at the bow holding the boat halves together. The saw went right...

Mercury 7.5 HP Motor Refresh (1969 model year)

Well, I disassembled the crankcase half and then fitted the top bearing carrier to the remaining crankcase. things seemed to line up better and I was able to reassemble the crankcase with the crankshaft spinning freely. I put the flywheel on temporarily to be able to turn the crankshaft.

Gen V to Mark IV Swap - Sea Water Pump Changeover

I've had both Mark IV and Gen5/6 blocks in my day. The sea water pump bracket for the Mark IV setup is a simple hanger with a secondary tensioner bracket. Mercruiser Part numbers 15295T (Hanger) and 15751T ( Tensioner) the fuel pump is the simple engine block mounting type. Mercruiser...

Mercury 7.5 HP Motor Refresh (1969 model year)

Yes, I am thinking that either I have not got the bearing to seat properly, or as you say something is amiss further down the line. I will go back through the assembly. Here are an 'old' and 'new' picture of the bearing carrier. I cannot really tell if it is seating fully. It looks close...
