swap your drive from an alpha to either a VP drive or a bravo (both have cone clutches and don't use a shift interrupt)

unbolt yours or stick your head under there to see if they are staggered or straight, order PMGR (will be listed from 3.0 to 8.2 liter)

How to identify Mercruiser 3.0 starter model

there are 4 kinds of GM starters. a direct drive and a PMGR. each one of those comes in staggered bolt pattern (168 tooth flywheel) or straight bolt pattern (153 tooth flywheel) your picture is a direct drive.

90 HP early 80's 6 cylinder starting without key

on a 2-stroke outboard, the key is used to kill the ignition (the off position grounds the coils) unplug the controls and jumper the starter and it should be running.

OMC Bayliner Trophy ignition q’s

the terminal on the starter that used to be labeled "I" for ignition that provides full battery voltage to the points when cranking. that terminal may also be labeled "R" for relay. standard wiring for points style ignition.

make sure it is wired properly to the starter I/R terminal you dont want to run points directly to a 12 volt source.
