OMC 4.3 V6 dry joint "batwing" conversion exhaust kit

Hello just checking in did you decide which system you’re going with? It would be great if you found out if the Barr dry joint system would fit the engine with the OMC Volvo down pipes and rubber hoses. If so next time I have to change them I’d consider going that way. BTW found out another...

    hub dust cap

I have those super lube caps on my trailer and have had em about 20 years, I haven’t had that problem, it may be that the quality of some of the rubber caps isn’t that good or, a dragging brake or too tight bearing is causing one side to get hot enough to expand the grease. Maybe replace the...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Hardware store has real chemical resistant gloves; might be a good idea when doing that much ‘glassing. Some people get allergic reactions to certain resins…

I recall watching the first video of a Bendix ABS equipped Jeep Cherokee vs non ABS back in the 80's. Amazing difference for winter driving especially...

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

I think like with anything else, due to the differences in human nature, you will see different outcomes. Some will welcome the new tech, and learn how to use it best, others don't like it, will not use it or fight it. Engineers can engineer logically better systems, but the human element, is...

    1989 OMC Cobra exhaust seal

I had the batwings on mine for a long time but being in salt water you can't really use them longer than maybe 7 seasons, never had water in the engine from them. Went through a few sets of them. However, take a look at the wall thickness of the new ones on the left in that pic, vs the Barr...

Just thought I'd share a nice photo.

We used to regularly get snow like that, it’s why we have 3 Jeeps & a Subaru, but nothing in the last 5 winters….

Just thought I'd share a nice photo.

We're not getting that.....yet....but....I fired up my 28 year old Toro 2 stroke snowblower with its Suzuki 5 hp and all seems good with it. I have 4 sets of mounted snow tires in the garage for all of our vehicles, before I retired I always mounted them up every winter but since I've been...

    1989 OMC Cobra exhaust seal

Good find there! I think these problems also are a function of the static water line of the boat, i.e. how high up the water comes in the Y pipe, and also driver habits, not slowing down too fast unless it's actually necessary, etc. PS I found an easier way to check the 2 piece manifold/elbow...

Why do V8 boat engine have so many cooling system parts ? Compared to a basic V 8 car engine ?

Looking at a late model Merc with that system gives me anxiety. In fact I told my brother who owned one of the block drains clog the way that boat was designed it’s nearly impossible to get down to the bottom of the block! He traded it on a similar boat with a 4 stroke outboard!

    My block is drained, right?

Getting back to the subject of the thread, is the block drained, I recall a few people on here talking about what comes out of the block when replacing the core plugs, apparently if you boat in shallow water you can have sand and rust packed in there, and it is possible it might not drain. Now...

    My block is drained, right?

If you search there are tons of articles on the first few years of the Vortec engines having intake gasket problems, some felt the gaskets were bad, others felt that the Dexcool coolant was causing the plastic to degrade, causing leaks. Fel-Pro came up with their problem solver gasket for this...

I don't think so. Those vortec gaskets were definitely troublesome for a few years....

3.0 omc engine mating to mercruiser outdrive

Good point, I don't know when Merc/OMC switched from the 2.5 liter to the 3.0 liter but the Cobra started in 1986. Not sure if they ever used a 3.0 with the older Stringer drives. Checked, the use of the 3.0 goes back to at least 1982, before that they are listed as a 120 hp and 140, guessing...

3.0 omc engine mating to mercruiser outdrive

I think what we need to know is this: are you putting the formerly OMC engine in a Merc boat with all Merc rigging? or putting the Merc drivetrain, etc, in a formerly OMC boat that still has OMC rigging? Because the one thing I do know about that is the control has to be reversed (FWD/REV). So...

3.0 omc engine mating to mercruiser outdrive

One of these days, when I can no longer get Cobra parts or can't get someone to do the drive work I can't do (never needed that yet, the most involved Cobra repairs I have done were the water pump adapter, trim rod seals and steering actuator) I could see myself converting my boat over to Merc...

3.0 omc engine mating to mercruiser outdrive

I don't know for sure what's involved but you'd have to strip off all the OMC rigging and replace it with the Merc, such as the bellhousing, probably the front engine mount, exhaust system, shift linkages, and control. Not sure about the engine wiring harness. I think the direction of the...

    My block is drained, right?

While cracked intakes is definitely a possibility in causing water in the oil, one other problem that affected both the V6 and V8 Vortec engines were bad intake gaskets, this was a big deal for GM, I don't know how long it took them to improve them, but it was a problem for many car/truck and...
