    If you have a volt meter check the voltage at the + side of the coil, you should have 8-9 volts, anything less then the resistor wire is the cause. Try to measure the voltage especially when the engine starts to act up.

    Yes, the screen is inside the tube. Also if you are trying to draw fuel through the anti siphon valve that is mounted on the pickup elbow then, that is why the pump cannot draw the fuel. Just drop the suction hose of the pump in the fuel sender hole.

    I can remember late 70s OMC school in Miami working on the 800 with hydro shift. They should have stayed with it. All the switches and shift interruption caused more headaches. The Cobra would have much better with the hydro system.
