    1979 80HP Mercury

Spinning one way with a rachet sound means the gearcase is in forward. Use a crescent wrench to gently turn the lower shift rod CCW until it clicks into neutral.

    1979 80HP Mercury

It is best to install the gearcase in neutral, as lower shift rod is in a single position, not a range as in forward. Obviously the control needs to be in neutral as well.

    Don't tape holes.

Wet sanding paper can minimize the clogging of sandpaper. I bought an air powered orbital disc sander. It uses velcro fasteners The paint on my speedboat melts when sanded, so the cool wet sanding works. When I removed the decals of my outboard hoods and midsections, I used a heat gun...

The midsection on my '93 Merc 135HPV6 has cracked

OK a slight correction the Permatex was the no. 3 type. I was putting it on the bolts to my poppit valve, when the wind blew and caused a bead on the midsection. Boy I am glad it is not a crack.....

Bought Boat and Steering is locked up

Dub, you do realize that the steering rods bind in the tilt tube far more often than they fail? I think it worth a look, as it would only take .05 worth of grease to fix it, once it is loose. Of course it will take a can of penetrating oil, a pipe wrench, an hour and some rags, plus maybe...

The midsection on my '93 Merc 135HPV6 has cracked

Actually, in the morning sun, vs dusk, it was a long thin drip of Permatex no 1 sealant. It was so consistent and long it sure looked like a crack and passed the fingernail test. F-troop back to normal.

The midsection on my '93 Merc 135HPV6 has cracked

It has cracked from powerhead to just above gearcase. What can cause it?

    Yes, likely normal movement

Bought Boat and Steering is locked up

Outboard steering cables often stick at the engine. Undo the large nut holding the cable to the tilt tube and then turn the wheel. If the wheel and cable insides move freely, you need to attend to the steering rod inside the tilt tube.

    1979 80HP Mercury kill Switch

I do not know. The carb throttle shaft and spring are replaceable, if you can find a used carb to cannibalize. On the other hand, it is just a spring. Maybe it can be bent back well enough.

    Play on propeller shaft

Gee, some in-out movement of the propshaft in the gearcase is normal. However, the prop is solid. The thrust hub washers and nut when installed and tightened properly, should not allow movement on the splines. Most Mercs have a ratcheting forward gear. This allows the prop to freewheel...

    1979 80HP Mercury kill Switch

The upper shift rod can rise up if not mated to the lower shift carb and impact the carb. There is a molded plastic fitting that holds the upper shift rod in place, in the midsection. They often fall into the gearcase where they do not function, or they get lost. If you have this fitting...

    Raising outboard higher

Gee, can you put a 2X2 between the motor and transom to raise it up a bit?

    1990 mercruiser 4.3 no spark

Make sure the spark is happening at TDC of the compression stroke (with the valves closed). If you had the distributor out to replace the sensor, it can go back 360* out of time.

    Ocean pro 150 head reseal.

I think you want to circle each water passage, not group them.

    1979 80HP Mercury kill Switch

The trim limit switch was set to keep the motor from "trimming" out of the transom bracket. On the original control, push and hold the center button for trim. If you wanted to trailer the boat, you push the top and middle button together to bypass the trim limit switch and allow the motor to...

    1979 80HP Mercury kill Switch

Originally your PTT unit had a trim limit switch. It was on the starboard PTT bracket, and it plugged into the main harness under the splashwell. I think the wires were purple. The trim limit switches broke all the time, and the workaround was to unplug the limit switch and jumper the two...

    Don't tape holes.

Gee, one would think tape is preferable to sinking, no? Gee, use some acetone to get it off.

Mercury 35hp 2 stroke Lower Unit Stripped

Gee, the trim tab is soft zinc, right. Drill some holes in it and using a chistle, crack it off the bolt, piece by piece. Now replace the bolt and the trim tab. A lot of those old motors had a hex head bolt, that required a thin wall socket to remove. An allen head bolts works well also.

    1979 80HP Mercury kill Switch

OK, if the motor is a 1979, it will have 4 coils and 1 switchbox. The ign kill switch will ground the orange (or salmon)-colored wire, to kill the spark. The orange (or salmon) colored wire will be avail on the switchbox at the engine, and avail inside the control.
