    Most outboards when not running you will need to spin the prop while shifting. When mine went out it started screeching. Opened it up, found the balls, greased them so they would stay in place and that gearcase is still running today. I have a backup waiting on the wings. OMC small motor...

    You can certainly hope but probably a dirty carb. I showed someone once what a dirty carb looked like and the couldn't tell that it was dirty. Doesn't take much.

    I think your fine without it and if it's running fine it proves it. It's called an air box(no filter) we called it "the splash box" back in the day. Sound less "throaty" with it on.

    I purchased that same motor brand new in 1991/2 Ran it hard today! Are you trying to shift that while it's off? If it's not shifting while running, remove the gearcase guys and replace or lube up the balls. Make sure there's no water in there first.

    Just because water is coming out of those holes means it's everywhere. Shoot the top of the heads/head with an IR gun.

    Johnson 90 Oops it did it again

    If you start the motor and disconnect the red plug, run it around the lake hitting wakes, logs and old people and see if it recreates the issue. If it doesn't, it's north of the motor. Warning alarms won't work and you will have to plug it in to turn it off.

    Probably cheaper/easier to buy a new tank. Probably 50/50 on a new Amazon replacement part.
