    Battery disconnect while running engine

I would check the alternator, as the diodes usually blow when the battery is disconnected. It should be as simple as checking for AC voltage at the battery when the engine is running. If no AC voltage, check for DC voltage rise as RPM increases, to confirm alternator is charging.

    Fast idle/start

I am not an expert on your motor, but my '98 Johnny developed a situation where the linkage stuck. I exercised it and it was fine after that. You might like to see if it needs lube.

    Trailer Painting

Out here on the salt pond, powder coated steel lasts just a bit longer than painted steel. Neither are practical, IMO. Outside stuff needs to be hot dip galvanized, aluminum or stainless. HD galvanized needs any suspect spots promptly painted with the cold zinc spray. I use a couple of...

    Toyota/Lexus Timing Belt Change Thoughts

Gee, I am not sure of the question/dilemma. You bought a used car with a lot of miles and don't know the maintenance history. I would get a service manual and see what maintenance needed to be performed. Some stuff you can check at least casually like oil and fluid levels. I would change the...

    1992 johnson faststrike 150

Overheating will activate the S.L.O.W system which limits RPM, but should not stall or otherwise shut down the motor. That motor should have the shift assist switch which kills spark to 3 cylinders. Perhaps the shift assist switch is activated and then S.L.O.W. then causes the engine to...

    1992 johnson faststrike 150

Are you sure the alarm is for overheat? 150*F is not overheating, as thermostats are 143*F. In addition, your motor may have a fuel restriction alarm on it as well as overheat alarm, plus the oil low alarm.

    Trailer Painting

How old is this trailer? I will assume you boat in freshwater, or just use the trailer twice a season, and slip the boat? Sandblast and then prime is best, but wire brush off the loose rust and prime those areas with rusty metal primer is pretty good. Brush on a nice oil based topcoat and you...

    Covering Built-in Fuel Tank?

I have a hatch over the tank sender, however, the anti-siphon valve, fuel line and vent lines occasionally need maintenance. The hatch is not near any of those. The tank has a full cover secured by 8 or 10 screws and is caulked. The bilge drain runs under the fuel tank, so any water that...

    Covering Built-in Fuel Tank?

Gee, make the tank hatch out of dry 1/2 pressure treated plywood, and seal it with poly resin. If it needs more strength, see if you can use 5/8" plywood. It should last 10+ years.

    Ignition switch

Does it have a distributor? It doesn't reeally matter as Merc harnesses work for both distributor ign or ADi ignition, but useful to know for troubleshooting. Wire colors on that old Merc should be: White - ign power red- battery +12VDC Yellow-starter solenoid power- goes thru neutral safety...

    Mercury 50HP 4S won't crank

Gee, I never saw one break. They are located inside the MerControl. A lug on the MerControl linkage closes the switch, allowing them to connect power to the starter solenoid, when in neutral. Maybe a wire to them broke?

mounting my Mercury force 125 for repair

On my Merc V6, the PTT motor can be replaced with the motor still on the boat, but the steering cable needs to be loose, and the starboard transom bracket unbolted and moves out of the way. The engine should be sitting on the transom, or blocked to the transom to help carry it's weight.. The...

    (Question) Easiest floor repair

Generally you would sand the damaged areas until they are clean and sound. Wipe with acetone. Now determine if you need cloth, mat, putty or some combo to make the fix. Mat for thickness on repair that doesn't need much strength (good for decks) Cloth for repairs that need lateral...

    Covering Built-in Fuel Tank?

I would recommend you just screw down the fuel tank cover, so access to the fuel tank is maintained. Tank senders often break, anti-siphon valves can clog. and water and dirt can get into the tank and it is easier to get it out with tank access. I would make a cover out of plywood and cover it...

    Mercury 50HP 4S won't crank

Wiggle the throttle handle (R-N-F), while holding the key in the start position. Sometimes the neutral safety switch can stick.

    100hp falters

Gee, you had me 'till no crackpots Air leak in fuel line? Remove anti-siphon valve for test. Fuel line diameter is min of 5/16". What kind and quantity of fuel filters do you have? A lot of those Mercs went on SeaRays of that year. My SeaRay of that year had a fuel filter inside the...

Can you paint an outboard cowling with automotive spray paint?

Strip off the decals, and wet sand the cowling. The Home Despot near me carries marine enamel in qts. White for the Johnny and black for the Merc, in one of those gravity feed spray guns did a reasonable job. New decals should be avail somewhere on the internet.
