    Does your u-joint have grease fittings? If so pump them full and see if the grease pushes any water out of them..if it does then you'll know for sure.

    Also when you separated the lower from the upper to replace impeller the shift shafts have to be in correct alignment. A manual is good to have..

    Yes what @Scott Danforth suggested, remove the rub rail and then take the entire deck off. It will make your referb much easier.. your basically reversing how it was built. And while the cap is off is a good time to re-bed deck fittings..

    Think about the shape of the leg, it's a foil when it pushes the water to the sides the water immediately wants to go back where it was. Atmospheric pressure. Put a pump intake in the path of this water that you just pushed out of the way and the water will go there like stink on fish..
