    Stern drive woes

You do not have to worry about reinstalling the shift shaft. There is no way the “C” shaped lever can come dislodged. The entire propeller shaft has to be removed before before the lever can be removed.

    Stern drive woes

If you are worried about drill chips in the lower then try this. Below the bushing is a flat washer with a hair pin clip or another type of retainer. With 2 pair of vice grips biting the shift shaft splines pry up and the clip will either break or open enough to pull the shaft out then with a...

Have you checked the timing cover for the source of getting water in the oil?

Mercruiser 888 no go over 3000rpm

If all of the above checks out then I vote for the fuel system as the cause. Considering the age of the boat and fuel system‘s age take the 6 gallon outboard tank challenge. Connect it to the fuel filter inlet and give it a run.

    Mercruiser 165 distributor breaker plate

While the breaker plate is removed make sure that the fly weights and springs are in good condition and the rotor shaft does not have excessive play causing the points to not hold a steady dwell angle.

Urgent help - nearly broke down at sea. Fuel Problem.

Good possibility that the screen in the suction tube is where the problem is. Hopefully you will be able to unscrew the fitting from the tank, the tube screws into the 90* fitting so that you push the screen out with a suitable tool.

    Inconsistent Sparks

Get a jumper wire and connect the + side of the coil to a 12 volt source and check the spark while spinning the engine. You may have a problem with the starter boost solenoid By-pass circuit which delivers 12 volts in cranking mode only. Does the rotor shaft have enough movement to make the...

1977 OMC Stringer running hot or ??

Start with the clear hose idea, the only problem about running in a tub is picking up bubbles. You want clear going in and also going out to the manifolds which will indicate a head gasket leak. You should at least try another water test.

No engine alarms. Can’t find anything in service manual.

It will also help if you added a water pressure gauge which will show a low reading before the engine overheats.

Alpha One power steering - how to remove cable?

If heat and penetrating oil does not work then try this. To make it easier to handle unscrew bolt #19 and pull off the tapered bolt with #17 that the Doc sent. Then pull the cable jacket as far out as possible then if you have an abrasive saw blade cut the inner cable next to the outer...

IAC whistle ??? Merc 7.4L MPI

There is a small piece of foam rubber about 1/2” square that fits in the IAC that muffles the sound. Over time it breaks down. I had that problem with my Donzi and that cured the noise.

Be sure to check for 12 volts at the starter solenoid.

    Alignment help!

If the transom checks out to be solid then since I do not have eyes on your boat I have another question. Does your boat trailer have keel rollers? If so it is possible that the hull has settled which will raise the front mount taking in consideration the age of the hull. Mad props and Scott06...

89- 5.8l OMC with Holley 4160 flooding problem

Holley has a factory rebuild service. If you could ship the original carburetor to them over the winter then you have the correct carburetor set to original specefications.

    U-joint seized into gimbal bearing

It is possible to cut the shaft and it may be possible that the shaft is bound up in the drive coupling. I have had to use a cutting torch while my assistant kept a garden hose going at the same time. If you grab the joint with pliers is it possible to feel some slack in the splines. If so...

    Can’t find dropped pin

You will probably find the pin in the bilge after the boat runs on plane for a little while. If it was to get into the flywheel housing that would be a problem. Not very likely to happen however.

    Can’t find dropped pin

If you are looking for the stainless steel pin that is held in place with a cotter pin you can use a 3/8” stainless bolt with a self locking nut.

    Trim Bonding Cable

I am trying to remember, but I believe there was a stainless wire that was screwed to the tiller bar and had a larger eyelet crimped on that goes under one of the 7/16” studs that secure the inner transom plate. Then there should also be another wire from the engine block to the same stud.
