    Outboard motors will emit steam from their exhaust, when the weather is cold. Usually you do not see steam when the weather is warm. Usually you will see real clean spark plugs, if you are getting water in the cylinders.

    You might check the threads on the gearcase. After some time, they seem to fade. That makes it hard to install the retainer after the seals are renewed.

    Interesting question. The 1970 Merc would usually have a 4 bolt 3/8" pattern. If you have PTT, it would be 6 3/8" bolts. The newer motor would have a 4 bolt 1/2" pattern, which is a different layout. You might measure the width of the tilt tube on the motors and see what the difference is...

    Fuel Delivery Issue

    Check the vent on the fuel tank. An easy test is to loosen the fuel filler cap and try the boat. If she holds high speed, you have a partially clogged vent. Some fuel pickup tubes also have a filter on them. You might pull it and see if you have such a thing.

    Actually, the only time I change the spark plugs on my outboards is when the shells get rusty and threaten to stain the powerhead.

    You need to look around, as some places do charge a lot. The Mazda brand iridium plugs for my car were $24/ea. I found some for about 1/4 of that price. You can check places like autozone, rockauto and advanced auto parts. The latter had QL78YC plugs for my Johnnyrude for $3ea, last year.

    Tires…

    Radial and bias belt tires corner differently. That is one reason not to mix them on automobiles and trucks. All my trailers came with bias belted tires. Even my 4300# dual axle trailer. Obviously, the tow vehicles are radial tire equipped. It would appear that is not therefore an issue.

    Boat Tarp Material?

    Sunbrella is the best against rot. It is expensive, however. Canvass and its synthetic versions are pretty good, but don't last as long. So it is a flyoff between covers that last longer than others and the price of the cheaper covers. Wind damage makes a difference.

    You still do not want the motor to start in gear, so a neutral safety switch is a must. I would expect your control will have one.

    Remember, when starting, you cannot normally flood them. So, pump the primer up until hard, cold start lever all the way up, hold choke button and crank her until she fires. After that, feather the choke until she is warmed up, and lower the cold start lever.

    Spring is around the corner
