    since the pieces on impeller went into the tube from the pump, I would see if you could flush it out the same way it went in. not sure if you could rig up something to the stat opening to force water with water hose in from there

    compressed air is used all of the time ,I usually use it while the motor is running on muffs so the air can move debris around and hopefully out with the rest of the water flowing out, removing the stat also gives it another exit point at the top of the power head. not sure, but maybe you are...

    why afraid of pulling lower unit? that has to be pulled to replace the pump anyway. dropping the lower and inspecting the pump again is a very good idea since you ran the motor with not enough water to get to the pump. those pumps do not like pumping just air, you may have damaged it already

    only true way to find out would be to dyno the motor before and after the modification. with a 50% increase in HP would a different prop be needed also also it was mentioned the reed stops were different allowing the reeds to open more

    and do not wait so long to drop the lower unit and change the water pump. gives a chance to clean everything and lube it up, even the drive shaft where it goes into the power head. those are even harder to get apart if they rust together

    I guess you are talking about the lift pump that fills the VST. you also need to understand the pump in the VST is cooled and lubed by the fuel running thru it. without fuel in there to pump you could have hurt that motor also running it dry.     I would think someone could rig up something easier to get to. quick connects for garden hoses are readily available at hardware stores if nothing else set a Tee in and bring it out to an area easy to get to and then put a connector on and rig up a cap or plug to close it off when not flushing
