when you buy a used motor, you need to do all the maintenance the prior owner didnt do before they sold it. impeller, gear case service, PTT fluid service, new plugs, etc. you did check the motor over prior to purchasing and at least did a compression test?

2003 Chris Craft Launch 25 - VolvoPenta engine replacement - need engine advice

there is no horsepower limit in I/O motors. so you could put 500hp motor in there. however a new 5.7 longblock dropped in with new manifolds, etc. should be in the $8-10k range your looking at over $20k for the new 5.3 or 6.2 LT based motors. If it was my boat, I would strip out the fuel...

    leaking riveted starcraft ('82 MR180)

Remember, livewell pumps are rated at 0" of head. So if the rise from the pump to the discharge is 1 foot and you have 6 feet of hose (~1' of additional head) you have to look at the chart for the 2' of head. Which is closer to 600gph

Can it be repaired. Yes If you do the work yourself, expect $7-10k. You will need to hand-make a mold section If you pay someone. The cost will be huge. Assume $100-$120 per hour labor on top the materials

Bought my first boat to cut, gut and rebuild from bow to stern, including engine. Killed my back and suffered the wrath of the fiberglass demons

Grew up with Mercs. Some older johnnyrudes, some Atwaters, Mac's, Hiawathas. The Mercs always had more power for a given rating.. rating was at 3/4 throttle and above that was "reserve". At least that was the story I got at the time Dad had a buddy (Merc and Tecumseh contact) do some work...
