    Tach output from the motor

I would expect the tach signal to look like an AC signal on a voltmeter, as it is a series of pulses from the stator.

    Back to the same problem

ADI idle pickup timing should be between 0-9 * ATDC. It sounds like you should be closer to the 9* ATDC mark. That is after top dead center......

    Mercury 850 no spark

A 1975 Merc 850 would have a distributor and battery CDI ignition. A 1976 Merc 850 would have ADI ignition, as you describe. A small point. See if there is a test for your ignition components on the CDI Electronics web site.

    Bow plowing at high speed.

Wait, someone said "When in doubt, trim it out" Trim it until the steering feels light. A lot of cruisers, as you have noted, do not benefit from trim. Your boat, depending on hull style, may benefit a lot or a little from trim.

    Back to the same problem

Carbs closed do not control the idle speed. Idle timing controls the idle speed. So back off on the idle screw and adjust the throttle cable to push the throttle closed (retarding idle timing) to control the idle speed.

Does this 2 stroke motor sound right?

It clearly has a bad miss. Likely on one cylinder. You should inspect the spark plugs and see if you can figure out which cylinder. Maybe an idle adjustment is in order?

1960 Johnson 75hp. Backfired; stripped head threads for plug

You can use an ohmmeter to verity the points open at the right time. Remove the point wire from the coil. Set the ohmmeter to read continuity, and connect it to the point wire and ground. turn the motor over and see that the points open (continuity is zero) when the timing marks on the...

Merc 150,Where does this wire go?

Those are a very good design. Sorry you are having issues. You should probably get an OEM service manual, and go thru it, as a new motor is likely 15K. Since you did carbs, check compression, spark on all cylinders and then link and synch.

    Transom

Watch for cracks on the top corners of the transom, where it meets the gunwales. When you see those, or other deformation on the transom, you are close to transom failure. Other than that, it sounds like you have some time.

    Bow plowing at high speed.

You should see a wave coming off the hull at least 3/4 of the way back from the bow. if not the bow is plowing water. Can you post a picture of the hull defects. A hook in the transom area will cause the issue. Trim the motor up and see if the bow lightens. If not, you may need to raise the...

    Back to the same problem

Adjust your throttle cable barrell nut to push the throttle closed. That will lower the idle speed. I would recommend a 21* BTDC max spark advance, if you plan to use regular grade gasoline.

1960 Johnson 75hp. Backfired; stripped head threads for plug

Likely the second set of points was not set correctly. My fat fifty did that same thing. I was able to remove the crush washer and there was enough threads to hold the spark plug in. A solid steel spark plug insert is another option. You would simply need a new head gasket and the insert.

Merc 150,Where does this wire go?

A lot of those V6 motors have both a temp sender for a gauge and an overheat sensor for a buzzer, one on each cylinder head. A lot of times only the overheat sensor is hooked up to a buzzer. The sender wire is either loose or on an unused terminal block. Try to trace it back. It should go to...

    GPS speedo/tach?

Does the application info for the unit specify your motor? Modrrn Outboard tachs usually run off the stator pulses. A cell phone will often have GPS speed on it. Speedo Pitots are cheap and easily replaceable.

Merc 150,Where does this wire go?

Hard to tell from your picture. What color is the wire?

How to tell what carb I need?!?

4 bbl carbs require 4 bbl manifolds. Unless you are willing to replace the manifold, you will need to stick with a 2 bbl carb.

    Dead Evinrude?

Obviously the throttle handle must be in neutral for the motor to crank. Try wiggling the throttle handle, while holding the key in the start position. Also, jumping gauges implies an intermittent or broken ign key switch.

    Fuel tank capacity

Capacity of your fuel tank is only one piece of missing info. I assume you want to know the range of the boat as well. Can you pull up a deck panel to expose the top of the tank? The size of the tank is usually stamped onto it. if not you could measure it and find the volume. Alternatively...

    static timing

Is the outer flywheel in the correct position on the flywheel hub? If not, rotate the motor until the top cylinder is at TDC. Now set the flywheel so the timing decal faces where the timing pointer would bolt on. Get or make a new timing pointer. A flat piece of metal or plastic works. Now...

1997 Johnson 150 VRO oiling system

If that motor has the 4 wire OMS pump (likely), a new one will be plug and play with your wiring and plumbing.
