scratches on the block where the balancer shaft bearing sits on 4.3. Does it need to be machined or can I just press the bearing over it?

If the core plugs were pushed out, 99.99995% chance the block is cracked. (GM blocks never survive a freezing that pushes core plugs out) Take it to your local machine shop and have it magnafluxed

Volvo Penta 5.7 GXi - Propeller selection

Without knowing where you are at with your boat and current prop, no one can make a guess if you have the right prop or the wrong prop The right prop will allow your motor to hit the top of the full RPM spec lightly loaded You never want to be over-prop'd

    1996 Polaris SLT780 compression issues

Running with a choke meant something in one of the carbs was plugged Running it like you did with the choke on probably killed one of the bores.

I freeze my block so you don't have to!

you may want to check that. at -20 there is a potential for a higher delta t, and there is less BTU's to remove to get the block to freeze.

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Here is a picture of the open deck. see how any combustion gasses seeping past the cylinders except that little bit of landing in the middle would have to go into the cooling water jacket. here is a picture of the open deck being closed for a high-performance hot-rod build.

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

the pressure test says that your head gasket where the cooling passages are is in tact. being an open deck block, it would be unlikely for combustion to transfer from one cylinder to another without entering the combustion side. you did have the cooling water drained when you did your test...

I freeze my block so you don't have to!

wait until ambient air in the garage falls to 20 and you will see your block temp drop quicker. right now your still at 25ish with an 37 degree block. you have a thermal mass of iron in the 400# range. knowing that ductile iron has a k factor of about 70, you should be able to calculate the...
