You sure it's not purple? Then it would be wiper leads. Purple for power, orange for park, and a black wire
Start at battery with tools, 150 grit sand paper, dielectric grease and marine electrical varnish. Disconnect, sand, clean every connection shiney enough your mother in law will eat off them, only stop when you stop coming to connections.

If you do it from the outside and you leave a 4" border, that is not a full transom replacement. The transom and stringers are the spine and skeleton of the boat. Not doing it correctly will lead to a catastrophic failure.
