Ted, you have to ask yourself....... since the sensor used by Mercruiser looks remarkably the same as a GM oil pressure sender...... are the wetted components compatible with salt water?
I have yet to find a sensor in the catalogs from BWD or SMC that is salt water compatible...
The 4.3 has always been on the raged edge of reversion and detonation with a stock can
If you want more power, go with vortec heads and a 4-barrel
What vintage is your current motor
What vintage is the vortec motor
Is the vortec motor a truck motor or a marine motor?
Ok, we know you are posting in the Mercruiser section, so we assume twin Mercruisers
You have twins with fiberglass mufflers, do going to assume inboards
Beyond that, the inboard SBCs for the past 65 years have had multiple different cooling systems.
High temps is low water flow
What year...
you have to get the engine manuals from Mercruiser. http://publications.brunswick.com/
regarding your motor, 4600-4800 RPM. However I would not have a problem turning that motor 5000 RPM

then at the top of the forum are some "stickies" threads that are permanently "stuck" to the top.
4th sticky down, go thru links 14, 15, 18, 2, 3, 4a, and 4b in their entirety.
you still need a drive. the 2.3 liter has the wrong gearing for a 5.0. plus you need the correct transom assembly.
you need to change everything from the front pulley to the propeller
