It would help if we knew what vintage drive you are talking about. the old stringer drive and electric shift drives can grenade a section and not take out the other section. however the newer drives will share debris

the SM is a different animal, however the lower is similar in both design and shape, but NOT interchangeable.
if your thermostat is stuck open, the motor will never get to operating temperature to burn of condensation.
change the oil a few times, fix the thermostat issue and then take the boat for a good run at temperature.
