    The thermostat is under the wee cover at the top of cylinder head.----There may not be a pressure control valve on this motor.

    Sorry I am too far away to look over your shoulder.----Perhaps it is just the cover on the cylinder head that needs to be removed for cleaning.

    1983 Johnson 60 dies when throttling up

    On the metal OMC tanks of the 1960's and 70's you will see 2 wee pins.----Those are valves.----When pushed in by the hose connecter one lets fuel out of the tank.----The other one is the vent.-----So when a tanks sits in the sun with no hose attached ( cap closed ) it will build pressure.

    The 68 model came with a FIXED high speed jet.-----So someone was working on this motor.-----Perhaps wild guessing and installed a different carburetor.-----All bets are off.------Trouble shooting ( and it is simple ) will find what needs to be done here to get the motor in good...

    remote control for my old outboard

    If it has the wrap spring gear shift ( I think it does ) it uses a fairly special remote control.-----Remove steering handle and install it on the end.------Both helm piece and motor end look like a disc affair.-----Your location ?

    If the hose is plugged onto the tank the vent is open.----Should not the pressure.-----If hose is off the tank there will be pressure.

    Nope------That is NOT legit.-----The CD ( Johnson ) and the EVINRUDE models had a fixed HS jet starting in 1964 year.-----They offered a factory kit HS needle.-----That is not as shown in your picture either !!!----What article said 1971 for that motor ???

    Spark on the plugs means nothing.----Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" or more on s test device ?

    Fuel in a carburetor bowl must have atmospheric pressure on it.-----So there must be a vent to do that.

    Water does NOT go through these things.----Solid rubber material ( correct diameter ) will also work.

    Inspect ---water diverters.----Found in the engine block.----Cylinder head removal required.------These items guide water flowing through water jackets.

    Find a 20 amp fuse near the starter motor solenoid.-----Black rubber plug.

    A 1964 model 5.5 HP.-----Look through hole in flywheel to inspect coils.-----If they are original ( doubt it ) they will be cracked.-----Most of these era motor have both coils replaced already.-----Install a new water pump impeller ( power head must be removed ) before your first fishing trip.

    They are ----Corrosion products -----This is not salt.------Salt does not stay behind when salt water goes through an engine.------Google ----"Aluminum Oxide" ----See what can get rid of it.

    The white powder / crystals in marine engines are often mistakenly identified as SALT.----Salt dissolves away with water.-----This stuff that won't go away is not a salt product.

    Swap the wires on the relays and see if up now works..----Find the manual release screw / valve.----See if it is open now.----Post what you find.-----Compression test is step #1 on this MERCURY ( ? ) inline 6 -----Clean the carburetors.----A new water pump impeller before your first fishing trip.

    Salt Away?

    Salt Away is on the shelf because people spend money on it.----Plain water dissolves lots of salt.-----The white stuff you see around these motors is Aluminum Oxide.----Not sure if there is a potion that gets rid of these corrosion products.

    My 1997 150hp rebuild

    Bad idea on a high performance / hard working engine like that.-----Ring grooves will be worn.----Will not seal properly with new rings.
