    ??----It appears to me that this crack is due to water in the gearcase or a passage way..----It froze and cracked the case.----Pressure test this gearcase.-----If it fails you need to take it apart for inspection.-----I assume you just bought this boat.

    If motor keeps running with the manual fuel pump you need to go over the entire fuel system.----Starting with screen in the fuel tank.

    Safe to tow with bow not resting on front roller?

    In a high speed collision situation stuff will break.-----On my project the bow eye was anchored with a small block of wood.----That wood was rotten and come out as powder.------Replaced with solid glass with a second bow eye to boot.

    Yes that is what you are looking at.-----Properly done your grandkids will be running this motor.----These motors are scoffed at by some.----But seeing it was running with that kind of damage means that these engines are well built with just one flaw.----That being the design of the top piston ring.

    Cable disconnects up at the top / rear of the motor.----Post picture of cracked area.----Recommend inspection for rust damage if water was in there and exposed to oxygen !!

    Is that a simple---S hook ----on the safety chain ?----If so that is the first thing to replace with something bigger and better for a 20' boat.

    It be a 78 or newer.-----Not electric shift.-----Smaller ones were " 400 " models with gearcase similar to V-4 outboards.-----Larger ones were the " 800 " models with gearcase similar to a V-6 outboard.----So what HP or engine is in the boat ?
