    yes, if you are bored and have the tools not much of a gain with a stock bump-stick and 5000 RPM limit on vortec heads, blend the intake bowls and runners, leaving the passages rough (carbide only) while tapering around the valve guide boss the exhaust should be bowl blended and port matched...

    thats a stringer gear case, and if the paint is factory white, its a 1978-1981 hydro-mechanical shift the 1982 to 1985 mechanical cases were silver

    any fresh water cooled block will have rust. its the nature of the beast yours looks to be fresh water only. replace the the waterpump as the housing looks sketchy
