    Those decals were used in 1984 and 1985.-----The 86 might be a coincidence.----Does not really matter as serial # is used to order parts.

    Boat has never had transom drilled before. Where do I start?

    Put motor in the center of the boat.----Use large C-clamps to pull motor to the transom.----Drill the top hole at the top.----Drill near top of the slot on the bottom..----Done.

    How does it run if your assistant operates the manual fuel pump ?----A standard pump from a lawn mower ??----Put the pump on from a 3 cylinder 70 hp motor a 1983 model .----Or find the 3 cylinder 65 HP model from say 1990 and use one of those pumps.

    Looks like both need replacement.----And a total inspection of all steering bits needs to be done.----Visit a good fab shop for parts.-----Mc Master-Carr----Might have bits in their book.

    You have to put the idea of balancing the crankshaft away somewhere.----It just is not needed on a 45 year old motor !!!

    It just sounds like you need a depth sounder and take it easy.----Sounds like you have the correct prop.-----Changing to a smaller prop is not the solution !!

    On more than one occasion have I shown folks damaged pistons and broken piston rings .----Told them the motor needs a rebuild / new pistons.-----People looked at me in disbelief and questioned my opinion / honesty.-----So now I refuse to help folks locally and just chuckle when I hear of folks...

    Mercury 850 took the leg off 1976 thunder bolt

    Proceed to the nearest boat repair shop.----They can put the unit up there with shift in the right spot in minutes.-----You can then put the rest of the bolts in.-----If they help you just say you will be a customer from now on !

    If you were on skis behind the boat water would be pouring out that tube.-----Then when the boat stopped water and water vapor would be pouring out that tube.----Often mistaken for steam and overheating !----Then as motor cools it reverts to just spitting water out with exhaust.-----So install...
