    Look at / find a set of transom brackets for say a 1968 V-4 Johnson or Evinrude.----Those big motors just slipped in those brackets.----Then 2 captured bolts held the motor in those brackets.-----Might be an option for you.

    I have done transom / stringer work on a 1979 SCARAB SPORT.-----The factory brochure says -----" World class boats "----Not really true in my opinion.----Typical cheap wood used in them !!

    First step is a new impeller !-----How long have you owned it?-----Most motors should have a new impeller installed every 5 years.

    That motor is " long shaft " meant for a boat with 20" high transom.----A short shaft fits properly on a 15" transom.-----In both cases there is the same amount of motor below the boat.

    Where I worked all lifting gear was subject to annual inspection !----Shackles , eyebolts and slings.------Some common lifts were 35 tons ( electric motors ) some lifts up to 200 tons as well.-----Required 2 cranes for those big lifts !----Regular lifts involved a machine likely worth $5 or 6...

    The very early 50 HP motors 1971 through 1975 have stronger gearcases than the 76 through 1988 models.-------The 1989 model 40 / 48 / 50 HP to end of production are also not very robust !!----That is why the 3 cylinder gearcase was used on some of the 2 cylinder " commercial " models.

    Need to revisit carburetor work.----Float or float valve has issues.-----Perhaps post the compression values on this 36 year old crossflow motor.

    Looks like a lift point through the front deck.-----And 2 lift points to the transom.

    There is no way that I would sit in a boat being lifted as per pictures in post #1.---If I had to do that lifting.-----I would fabricate HEFTY lifting points that go through the rear deck to the transom.-------And through the front deck to the hull !!

    The 97 model 50 HP that you have is a 2 or 3 cylinder ?-----The last picture seems to show a 3 cylinder lower unit.-----A much sturdier unit than the 2 cylinder models !

    Removing the drives gives the marina a few extra feet of space when they are packing boats into a building or even outdoor space.------Extra space = extra money.

    It sure does matter !------Find the STRONGER end of the bearing.----That is the end you push / hammer on.

    You can take ohm readings on the sensor coils and charge coils without removing the flywheel.------But first check all the pins / sockets on the rubber " plug in " connectors.

    If you machine to make the head gasket surface flat how do you deal with camshaft bearing alignment ?
