The art of Alpha One Gen One Maintenance

clymer manuals make great knee pads, are only OK for use as emergency toilet paper, however really suck as a manual. in addition to your factory mercruiser manual, there are videos and links in the stickies.

    5.7 mercruiser heads question.

no such thing as a freeze plug. there are core plugs to get casting core sand out at the factory. to marinize a block, you need marine head gaskets, marine cam, the forementioned brass or stainless core plugs and a marine circulating block.

    2004 volvo penta 5.0 gl-e camshaft

agreed that the area of the block just inside the fire ring has rust. however not sure why. remember, the SBC bolts used since the late 80's are a one-time-use torque-to-yield bolt. you will need to get new head bolts ($35 for GM, about $130 for ARP)

    Need the Prop Gurus!

agreed, post your compression numbers. is hole #3 low? 4600 RPM is way to low of an RPM with the 17p prop have you weighted the boat

2MPG boat for cruising the ICW ??

I would suggest you actually plot your fuel use. You will find your average consumption higher than you think. Plan on 6-8 gph average and rejoice when you get more. Too many no wake zones and traffic in the ICW to simply cuise along just above idle

    Drain Plug Rot

Fiberglass boats are designed to last 15 years. Anything past that is a bonus. Since the 2022's are now being built, your boat is 32 years old and your transom is soft, guaranteed you find other issues. I would plan on a full hull restoration

    Looking For An Owner's Manual.

    handheld vs fixed mount VHF

I have a hand held that now is used for the ditch bag. The problem I had in the north woods was I was the only one around for miles with a VHF until the warden came by. Most boaters only had cell phones. YMMV

2MPG boat for cruising the ICW ??

If you want fuel economy in a boat, get one with sails or oars. Too many factors effect fuel economy including load, bottom condition, wind, current, temperature, load, hull design, etc. At a minimum you are looking at diesels which have a BSFC of 0.33 vs a spark ignited motor with a BSFC of 0.4

    Motor swaps

Block, heads and crank do not know if they are in a boat, a truck, a car, a genset or a forklift. However the whole longblock does. Cam, gaskets, core plugs, accessories, electrics and industion are marine specific Dont even think of bolting the motor in the boat until you change the core...

In search for a 17 ft deck boat

Yes, actually attempted to follow the shoreline by watching the depth gauge and listening to the fog horns only ran aground twice until we hit the breakwater

In search for a 17 ft deck boat

word of caution with boating on lake Michigan. some days all you need is a 12' boat with a 9.8hp tiller and you can boat for days. other days you need something bigger than 100' with twin diesels and you hope you make it to a sheltered bay. sometimes the difference between the two is a 20...

Glue vs clip VP SX exhaust bellows

factory manual is spot on. if you have a clymer or chilton manual, you have knee pads to use when you get a real manual and pull the drive.

    Is this worht ot

the truth is the boat had issues 25 years ago when it was left to rot. those issues have not gone away. the boat has simply gotten more rotten in 25 years and in stead of hauling it to the landfill, the seller is trying to sell it to someone else who then will have to haul to the landfill. it...

    Whats my old motor worth??

scrap cast iron is $.03/# average SBC with exhaust is about 525# so $15.75 on another hand, as indicated by Mike. core value may be $100-200. you would make more parting it yourself, however that will take time.
