    Trim Sender Replacement

Hey guys, I'm in the middle of changing out the bellows on a pair of 2000 5.7GS with SX drives. I want to change the trim sending units at the same time, but am finding it very difficult to access the retaining clip holding the wires in place, in the transom assembly in behind the engine...

    2000 5.7L Carb to MPI?

I have the chance to pick up a cheap 2002 5.0L Merc MPI, that I'm told is seized. Will all of the MPI related parts function properly, on a carbed 2000 Merc Vortec 5.7? Thanks

    2000 5.7 GS Low Compression

Hey guys, I have a 2000 5.7 GS with low compression in the #1 cylinder. It reads 90 PSI while the other 7 read 180-190. I squirted a few ounces of oil in the cylinder, and it made no difference. I'm thinking my next step should be to pull the head, and see whats going on?

    Remote Oil Filter Issue

The starboard Merc 5.7 EFI engine on our 98 Monterey, has a remote filter issue. Best as I can tell, no oil or very little is flowing through the factory remote oil filter. The engine runs just fine. It runs at 160F, and has 60 PSI when up on plane. The reason I believe there is an issue, is...

    1993 Yamaha 4.3L Cracked Block

Hey Folks, I have the chance to by a 1993 18' bowrider and trailer with a Yamaha 4.3L I/O in good shape, except for a cracked block. I'm sure I can handle replacing the engine itself, but I'm wondering if aftermarket exhaust manifolds are available for it? The outdrive itself looks real clean...

1998 5.7 GSI Will Not Turn Over

Hey folks, I recently installed a longblock in a 98 Chris Craft, that was not properly winterized last year. I tranfered everything over from the cracked block and heads, and had it running on a skid without issue, before I put it back in the boat. Now I go to start it, and it wont turn over. I...

    No Power Steering

1994 Merc V6 with Alpha Gen2, equipped with power steering. It takes the same effort to turn the steering wheel with the engine off, as it does with the engine running on muffs. The fluid level in the pump is where it should be, and the belt is tight. Is the pump itself likely to be faulty, or...

    Bravo Bellows Replacement

Hey folks, I have to change out the Bravo u-joint bellows on our 98 Monterey, due to a u-joint issue we had recently. The bellows is torn, and must be replaced. The drive is already removed, and I have installed the new u-joints and it is ready to back on. Can I simply remove the exhaust...

    Merc 4.3 Alignment

Checking the engine alignment on a 2000 Merc 4.3 with an Alpha gen2 drive, in an 18 bowrider. The boat is in prestine condition, with what appears to be very low hours. [no meter] My alignment tool will only go into the coupler about 1/3 of the way, and it gets stuck. Tried rotating the engine...

    Bilge Pump Issue

1998 Sea Ray 280: Hey folks, Both bilge pumps in the engine compartment have an issue. After testing them by putting water in the bilge with a garden hose, they both seem to function fine for about 7-8 seconds, but then stop working, as each of them trips its own breaker switch. The water...

    Carb Rebuild Kit

Could someone please tell me the correct Sierra or Mallory carb rebuild kit part number, for a 1998 Mercruiser 5.7 2bl carb? The engine serial # is 0L019467. Thanks!

    Alpha Gen 2 Shifting Issue

I recently installed two new 5.7 longblocks in a 1998 28' Sea Ray. [Both blocks had been frozen by the previous owner:facepalm:] Anyway, I am setting up the shift cables, and noticed that I only have about 2-1/4" of travel in the cable itself from the shifter. This boat uses separate throttle...

    Thunderbolt V Ignition Timing

Trying to set the timing on a 1998 Merc 5.7 with a 2 barral carb. The serial # is 0L019480. I know I need to set it in base mode, [ground out the purple and white wire] however when I do that, I do not really see a change in the timing or RPM at idle. Should I? Also, this engine has a plastic...

    Exhaust Manifold / Riser Issue

I just removed both sets of Barr exhaust manifolds and risers to inspect them, off of two 98 TBI merc 5.7 engines in our 32' Monterey. I found a small amount of water laying in the bottom of the exhaust ports, on all 4 manifolds. There was also some water in exhaust ports in some of the cylinder...

    4.3 Head Gasket Issue

I'm in the process of replacing the Merc 4.3L engine out of a 1994 19' Sea Ray. The previous owner did not winterize properly, and you guessed it... a cracked block. I found a truck engine that seemed to be in good condition, and have swapped everything needed from the original engine. I...

    Should A Bravo 3 Clunk?

I have a twin engine 98 Monterey, [new to me this past spring] with a pair of Bravo 3 outdrives. When shifting the starboard engine into forward or reverse, it shifts very smoothly with almost no noise at all. The port side however, has a loud clunk sound when it shifts into forward or reverse...

    No Start / Merc 1998 EFI 5.7

Late in the day on Sunday, I had an issue with my port engine. It is a 98 5.7 Merc, throttle body EFI, serial # 0L067833. It would crank over ok, but it would not fire up. Previous to that, it was difficult to start sometimes, so all I did was open the throttle slightly, and it would start right...

    5.7 Merc Oil Pressure

I think I have an oil pressure problem... It?s a 98 5.7 Merc EFI [throttle body] engine, with about 500 hours on it. It seems to run just fine, except for this problem. This boat is new to me, and I do not have any history on it. When the engine is cold, I have about 35-40 PSI showing on the...

    Bravo 3 Trim Issue?

Re: Bravo 3 Trim Issue? Thanks Don. Perhaps someone else who has will chime in. Attached is a picture of what my shifter looks like.

    Bravo 3 Trim Issue?

1998 Monterey, twin Bravo 3 drives. Trailer switch works fine, with both drives going up as they should. When trimming the drives down, each drive lowers with its own switch. [one at a time] However when trimming the drives back up, both drives go up at the same time using either the port or...
