Buy a 5hp Mariner with a blown head gasket?

Yes I ordered some left hand drill bits with paired extractors. I'll have to look into a thread protector though. I'm thinking pilling the power head to get better positioning on the screws on question too.

Buy a 5hp Mariner with a blown head gasket?

Unfortunately they snapped pretty clean. I'll try the penetrating oil treatment while I wait for the extractors to come in the mail.

Buy a 5hp Mariner with a blown head gasket?

So the gaskets in question are the ones between the inner and outer exhaust covers. That whole sandwich seals in the exhaust intake and housing for the thermostat. If your solution will still work under this situation then I'll totally try that if I can't get the broken bolts out. I have 6 of...

    50 hp high speed misfire

Sorry I forgot to update this thread but the boat is idling fine now, thanks to everyone's help. May still need some final tuning and trim adjustments, but I'm also being a perfectionist.

Buy a 5hp Mariner with a blown head gasket?

Sweet thanks boscoe! Looks like I can even get the same busted screws. Is it worth actually buying the exhaust plate gaskets or would making some gaskets suffice? I have automotive gasket paper.

1989 Force 50 won’t idle after engine warms up

How'd it turn out? I have basically the same motor so I'd like to know in case this happens to me.

Buy a 5hp Mariner with a blown head gasket?

Copy raceroni. Yeah I just found some websites service some makes better than others so I was curious. I found what I need at crowley marine. Should I buy replacement gaskets or can I just make them? I have lots of gasket paper. Good idea on the guide idea too. I'll do that.

Buy a 5hp Mariner with a blown head gasket?

Welp I bought it. Everything looks to be in working order. The catch is the guy the seller bought it from must have tried to change the thermostat and broke 3 bolts to the exhaust cover in the process. I ordered some extractors to remove the stuck bolts. Any good way to find parts for these? I...

Buy a 5hp Mariner with a blown head gasket?

Actually turns out it isn't a blown head gasket. It's a "head plate" gasket or something. So he said it has some broken bolts and a bad gasket on the head. He sent photos and clarified that it's the gasket under the exhaust cover (what he called a head plate", and the broken bolts are the...

Buy a 5hp Mariner with a blown head gasket?

On the market for a kicker motor and found a mid 90s Mariner 5hp with a blown head gasket for $100. Looks pretty clean. Is this worth a look or should I keep looking elsewhere? Never done a head gasket and not sure if this would be indicative of more damage elsewhere. Thanks all.

Throttle and remote control linkage adjustment

Sorry I haven't resolved this one guys, I keep my boat moored pretty far from me since I don't have space where I live. I will check the shift cable as soon as I can. I have only adjusted the throttle cable so far. It had a good couple mills of slack when I adjusted it which seemed to help a...

    Force Outboards Rated By Model

Okay awesome, I'll be sure to double check before I take my motor out next. Like you said, it idles really nice but I'm pretty sure it's under that 1-1.5 turn threshold (haven't taken out on the water since then). Last I remember it idles okay, but not great at 1.5 turns. Is that typical? Or...

    Force Outboards Rated By Model

Okay cool! I see lots of those US marine 85hps kicking around my area for super cheap. I was wondering about those if I ever wanted more power. Yeah definitely going to take it easy. Does that "one screw turn out" advice apply to the same year 50s? That's what I have and I'm terrified of leaning...

Okay, did the lower unit issue ever get fixed under mercury? Do they just wear out? Can failure be avoided? I have an 88 50hp so it'd be nice to avoid lower unit problems
