82 Evinrude 115hp: How to run on stand?

I have a spare motor that I want to test run. Do I need to hook up a remote control box to get it to run? I've only ever tested tiller motors off the boat. Is there a way to run a 115 without a remote control? Thanks.

78 Johnson 115 Cold start Issue

Thanks. I will load test the battery Any idea what the cranking amp requirements are for this motor. Also, I have noticed that the motor doesn't trim up/down very fast at all. Tilt up/down is quick and smooth. Could that be battery related, as well? Mine is the old solenoid type type

78 Johnson 115 Cold start Issue

Hi the problem I'm having is that my motor won't start when its cold. This motor has a choke solenoid that energizes when you push the key in. I can hear the solenoid closing the butterflies, but the motor still will not start. I have to remove the cover and operate the manual choke lever and...

    1978 JOHNSON 115 HELP

This was the first run on the water since replacing T-stats and impeller. Compression numbers are are between 102 and 107. I know that is rather low, which is why I want to make sure to keep the motor cool. For now, at least, it's running good enough. Gets my little ranger bass boat up on plane...

    1978 JOHNSON 115 HELP

Hi, My question is about these two holes at top of the midsection, just below the cover. What is their function? Yesterday I noticed that water ( a lot of it) was coming out these two holes while running at WOT, but at idle or low speed there was not. Water still streamed steady out of the tell...

78 Johnson 115 Start battery Questions

Hi. I'm looking to upgrade my batteries and need to know how many CCA's are required to start my motor. I currently have one start battery and one trolling motor battery. All of my house loads are on the start battery. That said, should I get a Deep Cycle? Any advice would be appreciated.

    V4 crossflow cooling questions

Hi, I have a 78 Johnson 115hp. on an 82 Ranger bass boat that I've been fixing up a bit. I was finally able to get to the lake today for a test run. A few months ago I put a new remote control and cables on the boat but haven't had the time to get on the water. The motor had not been run for...

    1978 Johnson 115 Electric Choke

I put 12V to the coke solenoid and it worked. Then I unplugged the wiring harness from the remote control, put 12v to the connector pin purple/white wire, and the choke solenoid actuated. plugged the remote control in and pushed ignition key in.....nothing! Also not working: warning horn. Any...

    1978 Johnson 115 Electric Choke

Well, then it must be the wiring. This was a real PITA to wire up to my old motor. I suppose the primer could be bad. There is only one wire (purple/white) to it. Will it hurt the solenoid to put battery voltage to it to test? The factory manual only covers adjustment. Thanks!

    1978 Johnson 115 Electric Choke

Hello, the new remote control (BRP5006180) that I installed doesn't appear to have a way to operate the motor's electric choke. On the old controller you'd push the key in to operate the choke. Would it be possible to wire the choke to a toggle or momentary switch? ANY ideas would be...

78 JOHNSON 115 WATER PUMP AND SHIFT ROD

Hello, I am replacing the water pump and wanted to ask what type of sealant I need to put on the pump housing O ring? Also, is sealant required on the other gaskets in the water pump assembly? Also, since I have the lower unit off, would it be a good idea to measure the shift rod height? I...

1978 JOHNSON 115 THERMOSTAT HOUSING HELP

Well, I was able to get the center bolt out ,but not the two side bolts. Rather then pull the powerhead, I chose the "butcher method and drilled two holes in the lower cover, just big enough to fit a 1/4" drive socket. I figure I'll search online for some kind of rubber plug to put in the two...

1978 JOHNSON 115 THERMOSTAT HOUSING HELP

Hello, I have a 78 115 v4 and I want to check/change the thermostats. I have the factory service manual, but it's not clear (or I'm just not seeing it) if its's absolutely necessary to pull the power head. Can the thermostat housing be removed w/o hoisting up the powerhead?? Thanks!

    ARE 1978 JOHNSON 115 & 1982 EVINRUDE 115 PARTS INTERCHANGEABLE???

I've been looking for a motor to replace my 78 Johnson 115. Would like a four stroke to access more lakes (CA regulations), but I cant justify spending that kind of money on my 1982 Ranger 330V. I've come across a 1982 evinrude 115 for $1500 (Craigslist) . I inquired about the numbers and the...

    Bass Boat Seat Pedestal Question

Hello, I have a 1982 Ranger 330V bass boat that I need to get front and rear seats and pedestals for. As I am finding out, there are several different types and I have no idea which type is the correct one for my boat. All I really know is that the diameter of the holes, in which the pedestals...

Tilt/Trim Goes Up, But Not Down

Hello, semi-new to the forum (only posted a few times) I have a 1978 Johnson 115hp V4. My tilt/trim setup is the older solenoid type. My problem is that when I push the trim/tilt switch down all I get is a slight bump of the T/T motor but now downward movement. When I push the T/T switch UP I...
