Engine starts, idles for 10 seconds then dies

Yeah I'm leaning that way too... I'll pull it off this weekend and do a rebuild kit too.

Engine starts, idles for 10 seconds then dies

I've had the boat out a few times after the tee was installed and no issues then. No signs of fuel leaks on either lines and the kicker ran perfect for the 3 hour trip home too.

Engine starts, idles for 10 seconds then dies

1996 4.3 LX, A1G2 Weber 4bbl Carb (800 hrs)... so the wife and I were at the launch yesterday, ready to head out fishing and started the motor. It ran for maybe a minute then slowly dropped rpm sputtered and died. I left it for maybe 20 seconds then tried it again and same thing. Idled for a...

Hard starting 4.3LX, normal or not?

That's funny, my folks had the same '75 Olds but with the 455 cu.in. engine! Thanks for all your valuable input people. It gives me lots to investigate. Boats still wrapped up for the winter but will be getting into it in March. I'll post back when I get some answers or maybe more questions lol!

Hard starting 4.3LX, normal or not?

Great info Lou C... FYI, I live in NW BC just south of the Alaska Panhandle and my boating season is usually between April and September. Average temperatures range between 15c - 25c (60f - 77f) so definitely on the cold side. My routine at the dock is that I'll launch the boat, fire it up...

Hard starting 4.3LX, normal or not?

Yeah I've thought about doing that.

Hard starting 4.3LX, normal or not?

It's not a fuel starvation issue (I don't think) but more of a drain back problem. I will check into the ASV though. Not sure I even have one.

Hard starting 4.3LX, normal or not?

I think that after cranking the engine for 5 seconds that there is enough oil pressure built up to close the oil pressure switch which is why I can hear it priming. Good info on pumping the gas after the initial crank sequence, thanks.

Hard starting 4.3LX, normal or not?

Yeah, you're correct on the wiring setup and I'm going to investigate my choke more closely, but I don't believe it's a flooding issue.

Hard starting 4.3LX, normal or not?

So I have a 1998 4.3 LX mercruiser with about 700hrs on it with the weber carb and electric fuel pump. If it's been sitting for a few days, my normal start up procedure is to give it 3 full throttle pumps and then 1/4 throttle. I'll turn it over for about 5 seconds, let go of the key and...

1998 Merc 15 HP 4 stroke no spark

I'd love to have an actual service manual but I'm in a bit of a time crunch (as always). I think I've narrowed it down to the Pulser or CDI... just trying to dig up the proper way to test them.

Anyone have a wiring diagram for this motor?

1998 Merc 15 HP 4 stroke no spark

I use my 1998 15 HP 4 stroke Merc (OG674558) mainly for trolling (off idle to maybe 1500 RPM) and my last trip out, it ran fine for about 10 - 12 hours non stop. No issue. Next day out it ran great for about 30 minutes then seemed to struggle slightly for about 10 seconds then it shut off. I...

    A1G2 decisions. Rebuild or replace?

Well I fired her up this morning and did some preliminary checks and it's noticably quieter. No growling from the bearings which I was surprised to hear that there was that much of a change. Then the wife and I went out for a test run in the harbour and it ran great! Thanks for all the input...

    A1G2 decisions. Rebuild or replace?

Couple of pics of the alignment tool and the wear marks... No wear marks where the tool would make contact with the coupler when fully inserted (1st ridge from tip)... Noticable wear marks on the tip from making contact with the coupler...

    A1G2 decisions. Rebuild or replace?

True, but I'm pretty confident that it's in there all the way. I checked my placement of the disc 2 - 3 times with the original bearing installed before I drilled it out and there are NO contact marks on the tool either where it would've made contact with the face of the splines when fully...

This is the best shot I have of the coupler before I cleaned up the edge of the splines...
