How does the Mercruiser Shift Switch work?

I found the part number for the shift switch but it seems the part is discontinued? I can find used ones on ebay but would rather put a new one in. I believe it's #18 in the diagram https://www.perfprotech.com/mercury-marine-parts-catalog/shift-bracket-old-design/assembly/951/230?model=688...

How does the Mercruiser Shift Switch work?

I also happen to have a spare 1997 parts boat, it's got a newer 4.3 EFI and it seems a different type of shift switch, can I retrofit the new type switch to my older 4.3 Carbed? or better to just buy a replacement OEM switch?

How does the Mercruiser Shift Switch work?

Thanks Rick! Very helpful, so from my understanding when actually shifting into gear and depressing the microswitch it shouldn't have any effect on the boat, if the switch were working correctly that is. It should only momentarily cut ignition when shifting out of gear into neutral. But in my...

How does the Mercruiser Shift Switch work?

Hey all, I know this has been discussed a lot but I wasn't able to find my specific answer. My symptom is the common engine dies when shifting into gear problem, either forward or reverse. Most posts reference either the shift switch itself or the lower cable as the problem, I believe it's my...

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

That's with the plugs out, if I put the plugs back in it will just start grinding and won't turn over at all.

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

I don't think so, but is it possible the flywheel could come loose from the motor? I actually just took a video of the engine cranking over with plugs out, cranks fine but it does make a weird noise. Any ideas what's causing that noise?

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

So I decided to dedicate today to working on the boat. Installed the new master power switch and checked every single wire end, those that had some corrosion I cut back until it was clean wire and crimped on new terminals. Took forever but now I know I have solid connections. The starter does...

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

I wanted to check the voltage drop but the grinding is so bad right away that I didn't want to hold the starter down long enough to get a good reading.

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

Yea that's what I was thinking too, I just can't figure out what part, I just got a new main power switch yesterday so I'll throw that in and see if that helps, the original had corroded terminals that I cleaned off but not sure what the inside looks like even though it's supposed to be sealed...

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

Yup, I didn't torque the bolts because space is so tight it's hard to get a solid 1/4 degree turn in but I did tighten them as hard as I possibly could with a 3/8" ratchet.

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

By helm switch are you talking about the key switch? Several had mentioned that but I'm testing the engine using a power probe sending 12v directly to the starter relay so that should completely bypass the key switch and wiring being a potential problem I believe? And I'm trying really hard not...

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

With the plugs completely out the engine will turn over fine, I guess the starter teeth get enough contact to turn the flywheel when there's no resistance, but once I put the plugs in it'll just start grinding when I try to turn it over.

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

Yes engine turns over fine by hand, I have spark plugs loosely in, no wire connected.

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

Yup :) cleaned off the terminals connecting to the starter relay and it's also a new starter relay and key switch is new as well, but key switch shouldn't matter because i'm using a power probe at the starter relay. I've pulled this starter on and off at least 30 times by now -.- I've tried...

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely be buying some and putting it on every bolt lol, I hate dealing with corrosion problems and these older boats are just full of them.

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

Voltage at starter positive terminal is good, I'll check the voltage from the yellow/red wire but should that matter if I'm using a power probe to directly jump the starter solenoid? I have nuts on my batteries and cleaned off every connection with a dremel so they're nice and shiny. I also just...

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

My battery 1 is at 12.8v and my battery 2 is at 13v, I cleaned all the cable end terminals for both positive and negative and the terminals at the power switch. I also cut open a small square in one of the wires just to see if it was corroded inside but it looked fine.

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

Sorry for the late reply all, it started getting cold and I put the boat away in storage but now that it's starting to get warm again time to jump back on the problem. I haven't been cranking using the key, I've been cranking using a power probe attached to the starter relay and it still grinds...

Outboard almost hits transom when trimmed up?

It says Tracker by Mercury Marine on the cover but it's an inline 4 cylinder with 2 carbs sticking way out front, I can try to raise the motor, I hadn't fiddled with it much yet, just got it yesterday and crushed the fuel connector when I trimmed all the way up.

Outboard almost hits transom when trimmed up?

Hey all, I just got a new to me 1999 Nitro 185 Sport and it came with a Tracker 120hp by Mercury Marine. Engine runs great, but the issue is the trim, I'm not sure if this is the original motor for the boat or not but when I trim the motor all the way up to engage the support bracket it almost...
