1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

We ordered a 55gal drum of resin and hardener, all new hardware for the entire boat including all LED electronics, and a full roll of 1.5oz CSM and a full roll of 1708 Biaxial.... So, while waiting on all that to arrive, I spent most of today just cleaning old parts/pieces and stripping 40yrs of...

Land a big one! I've only fished the ocean one time, and the air and salty taste of the water spray was just heavenly compared to Lake Erie. I need to get out to the ocean again, inland fishing just doesn't compare.

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

That's EXACTLY how I plan to do my tank and setup. HDPE strips 5200 to the bottom of the tank, and barely 5200'd to the floor. Thanks for that site, tons of great info on there!

Ohhhh, ok. That makes total sense. That looks stellar!!! What paint did you use for that tank/bilge area? It looks great, so smooth and vibrant looking!

The HDPE is the correct rubber, or plywood glassed as pads if the correct way to gap the tank from the floor? Or, both? I'm trying to do it right and avoid any moisture issues from coming about of course. :)

Rehab SportCraft 222 1983 deep V hull cuddy walkaround

Yeah, Sportcraft 250's, 252's, 270's, and 272's are still the #1 choice for many, MANY, charters here on Lake Erie. Lots of Baha Cruisers, Sportcrafts, and boats like Hewescrafts are still pretty much king here. That's exactly why we're restoring the 270 from the bottom up, so we can fish...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Ahh, ok. I see now what your saying. Yeah, definitely going to go bigger then and just deck height all of it except for directly underneath the fish boxes where I won't have the room. I think I'm going to do our bulkheads and stringer setup much like yours under the tank. We have a 120gal tank...

Nice! Does the seaflo switch light up when the bilge is running, even if it's running on its own during auto? I built an entire dash for my 250 and kept having trouble finding one that lit up during automatic use. So i just made and wired my own (huge pain in the ass) lol This is the one I...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Oh, yeah, I'm definitely using marine ply for all the stringers (unless sourcing, wait times, or some other unseen issue gets in the way. But that's unlikely, as we already have a few sheets of 3/4" and 1/2" already now). When I was saying "debating using a 2x4" I was just saying that the...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Yep, we just bought a couple sheets of 3/4" AB marine ply $$$, and a few sheets of 1/2" marine ply. The 3/4" was 7 ply and the 1/2" was only 5 ply. But, they'll do the the job! I definitely saved the in floor fish boxes and the hatch openings. They were all flawless and sealed still. The floor...

Speaking of my floor coming up, how's your rebuild coming along!? I definitely took 1,001 measurements with pictures. My little girl was getting tired of holding the camera we took so many, haha.

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Ok, got the rear half of the floor up and inspected everything. Stringers were pretty well shot as we imagined, and some good sections. However, they appear to simply be 2x4's for the main stringers, with small sections of vertical plywood here and there as floor support on top of the stringer...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Inboards are finicky and are kinda hard to get the hang of at first, especially if you're used to IO's and outboards mainly. When reversing in an inboard, they usually walk a certain side due to prop wash (the prop biting into the water a little and pulling the boat the way the prop is...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: "El Crapo", I love it. Lol Yeah, they securely weren't designing for the long haul on these, judging by the corners cut and generic wet slop stringer jobs they did on this. Should I raise the engine beds to the height of the two little pieces of plywood? Or is there some...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Yeah, I've been running into "noway's" left and freaking right . Here's a good example of it: Automotive water pump with secondary water temp sender WIRE NUTTED in there. If you look closely, the engine beds have those two layers of little plywood chunks on top too. I mean...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Pulled the old tired Merc 255/GM 350 that was in the boat. We built a wooden gantry with two 2x10's as the crossbeam up top to take the load, and used a 2 ton manual chain hoist to do the heavy lifting. We put the boat back on the trailer to do this part. Pulled the engine up, then pulled the...

The overall rundown on Velvet Drives?

Well that is a sigh of relief. Especially given how the consensus from most of what I've been seeing, seems to be of the opinion that velvet drives are one of the best inboard drives for normal boating purposes and etc. With that said, I'm definitely going to more than likely rebuild it just...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Thanks man! I'm excited to be finally doing a complete makeover on one of these. I'm hoping to get lots of good layout ideas from the community as to what to do for the interior and etc. Make this thing the ultimate fishing machine hopefully. Tomorrow, we're planning on removing the engine and...

The overall rundown on Velvet Drives?

I just now am learning that a "V drive" is actually a thing. I see exactly what you mean. Thanks for the terminology correction and help. It's greatly appreciated.

The overall rundown on Velvet Drives?

Yeah, that seems to be the issue with most things mechanical anymore, especially marine related. I've ran into so many outdrives that are normally rock solid, but most don't pay attention or service until catastrophic failure. I really appreciate the help and manual! Thank you!
