7.4 carb with Thunderbolt V - Cant get into base timing

Yeah I can set the timing based on total I suppose, but I can't set my idle speed correctly without getting into base timing. Either way, need to figure out whether there is an issue with ignition module or if it's related to the low voltage issue. Will take a look at main engine ground...

7.4 carb with Thunderbolt V - Cant get into base timing

I had wondered why it seemed my timing was bouncy when setting base timing. I have been.grounding the purple/white lead. Was reading merc manual and saw the adaptive advance feature which I now understand why it moves around. Problem is that is supposed to disable with the purple white grounded...

7.4 Bravo water pump driven fuel pump

Just bought the carter on Jegs for $100 and next day shipping. Ordered the carter safety switch earlier. Hope this fixes the issue. Only thing left is the Ignition Module, which is NLA. Will check timing at 3500 rpm to see if advance is rhere or not. If not then ill install a DUI distributor and...

7.4 Bravo water pump driven fuel pump

Yeah I'm switching to electric and installing block off plate for old mounting spot. That bearing requires a ton of effort to replace. That Carter looks to be hard to get. Might do Holley Red unless u I can find something a little cheaper.

7.4 Bravo water pump driven fuel pump

On to the next issue in this 2 months new to me boat. Bought it knowing it had a power loss issue, but it was still usable and a good deal. First thing was compression test which lead me to a wiped cam lobe. Replaced camshaft with help from folks here. Water test yesterday still had issue. Still...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

It's alive. Primed oil pump, I stalled distributor, and it fired up after maybe 15 seconds cranking. Immediately to 2500 rpm for 10 min, 2800 for 10 and 2000 for 10. Slowly throttled back and turned it off. No oil anywhere, no strange sounds. Held 40 psi the whole time and 135 deg on the dot...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

Haha yeah a bit of mood lighting with mixed deck and engine room llighs. Correct on Gen V, but the intake manifold might not be original as iwas told engine was rebuilt 2 years ago by PO. I wish I could have thoroughly cleaned the whole engine on a stand, but just wasn't an option right now. I...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

All back together and cleaned up. Waiting for sealant to dry on intake manifold. I really should have just used the sealant on the front and back walls. I used both sealant and the rubber gaskets and it looks like part of rubber squeezed half way out. We'll see if it leaks when I try to start...

    Transom and floor replacement

My first boat was a 90s Bayliner capri which came with rotted transom. I cut open top around motor well and gutted the rot with an electric chainsaw and shop vac. Once all clean, I poured Seacast and then fiberglassed the cap back on. It came out solid enough to hang a Blackmax 150 off of it...

    Belts for 4.3 V6

You can loosen the adjustable accessories to midway in their adjustment and then run a rope around the belt paths. Measure. Then compare to the part numbers to see if length is in right range.

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

This is the wrong intake gasket isn't it? Edit - intake ports don't line up. Looks like I might not have the original intake. edit 2 - I'm an idiot. Wrong gasket. Intake is back off and gotta figure out what gasket i need.

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

Well that stinks. Would probably have gone that route to avoid all this flat tappet cam break in anxiety. Any way to id old cam shaft? I measured line lift at .310, which is a little more than stock 2.8x for the 7.4 Bravo. It was more in line with the Magnum numbers.

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

The stuff I read online made it sound like converting to roller cam required block modifications.

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

I hear that and understand the risk. Pulling motor just isn't an option right now so have to do what I can. It didn't leak any oil in the bilge and level stayed constant on the dipstick in the 2 months I've had the boat. If it leaks now it's cause I screwed something up on the install. I did...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

Thanks, appreciate all your and everyone's help. Bolt - pulley - washer - dampened it was. Bent my harmonic balencer removal tool not realizing that washer was recessed in there but no other harm done. New camshaft is in and smothered in Joe Gibbs Driven Assembly Grease. Rotates nice and...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

The crank pully should come off with the 3 bolts removed and the crank bolt still in, right? Just want to confirm before I start prying on it.

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

Single engine and 40 gal water tank is about 20 inches in front of motor. I don't have generator, so there is space on the tray it sits on to slide over and make about 36 inches clear in front of camshaft. Might have to cut the tray a little depending on where it lands, but very lucky it wasn't...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

I had bought some Ultra Blue but sounds like everyone uses Gray so will pick some up along with that Valvoline VR-1. Removing engine is not an option at this point. Rhe cost would be prohibitive as it would have to be at a marina shop and then they are doing everything. Only other option was...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

Couldn't get above 3,800 RPM and had tapping from starboard valve cover and high compression in number 8 cylinder. Ended up being a wiped intake cam lobe - thanks to everyone's help getting that figured out in this thread -...
