    MC-1 Gimbal ring removal woes

I'm taking apart (in order to restore it) my gimbal assembly (1972 L6 165 Mecruiser) and the FSM says there is an allen head pipe plug here at the top of the gimbal ring. I can see the remnants of something here but whatever it is has corroded measurably. What size allen head is this hole...

    Eastern nc mechanic recomendation

I’m restoring a 1972 Bertram with L6 165’s. I’ve already replaced the manifolds, risers, upgraded to alpha trim pumps, rebuilt the carburetor‘s, done a bunch of wiring work. I’m anxious to start working on the cosmetic parts of the restoration so I can actually have this thing ready for the...

    Recommendations for replacement multimeter

I've had this sun-pro/actron multimeter for about 25 years. Always worked well. Has been left in the rain at least once and dropped a couple of times but as a of a few weeks ago it seemed to be working correctly measuring RPM. Now all of a sudden RPM is way off and dwell reads right at .60 no...

Should I re-wire my engine harness?

The wiring on my boat is mostly original. (Twin Mercruiser 165 L6's). The wire on the motor side of the cannon harness has been obviously fiddled with as it is not nearly as tidy as a factory install. Due to a running issue I am getting ready to replace the resistor wire back to the cannon...

Can't get starboard engine to run after a bunch of work.

I am restoring a 1972 Bertram 25 with twin Mercruiser 165 L6's. I recently ran all new fuel plumbing from the tank to the engines and removed the mechanical steering and replaced with hydraulic (mostly done). Replaced old trim pumps with alpha pumps and relocated them into a forward area and...

Mercathode System removed. How to I tell if it works?

In order to clean up and re-organize my engine compartment I removed the mercathode system from my boat. I disconnected the wires and boxed it up. Now that i am starting to put things back together I am wondering how I can test its function. Might as well reinstall it if it works right?

Should I reuse these old fuel water separators?

I'm re-doing my fuel lines and am moving my fuel/water separators. Is there any reason not to re-use these old housings? Is all the magic done inside the housing or is it the filter itself that matters?

25 Bertram Backyard Refit. Do I want 3 batteries? Do I need Three?

I'm doing a DIY Refit on a 1972 Bertram(Twin L6 Sterndrives, MC-1 Drives). My first order of business was to get the machinery in order which I'm working through. I have done some engine work and some fuel system work and I'm moving my way back and I'm onto the drives and steering. I decided to...

    MC-1 165’s seastar install hangup

I’m replacing my cable driven mechanical steering with sea star hydraulic steering. The ram is supposed to thre hread onto the support tube to install it but when I try to fit it up the reverse lock solenoid assembly is in the Way. As a result I can’t line it up straight enough to install it.

Fuel Line tubing size? Mercruiser 165 L6.

I have a 1972 Bertram with twin 165's. Can anyone tell me the tubing size used for the hard fuel lines from the fuel pump to the carburetor? The rubber lines on mine are shot and I have the tools to make up some hard likes similar to the factory original ones but I don't know what size line to...

Looks like I ended up with 292's instead of 250's!

Thanks to Kenner for noticing this on another thread. I knew this new-to-me project boat had rebuilt jasper long blocks from a number of years ago. What I did not know was they put 292's in in instead of simply replacing the 250's. All this is assuming my internet research is correct...

Mercruiser 165 L6, Fuel pump leaking fuel.

I'm in the process of nursing these 165's back to health. I have replaced the manifolds and risers, cleaned the carbs and finally got the stbd motor running without leaking water. The lack of water allowed me to notice a very large fuel leak. I was planning to replace the fuel lines and all...

Mercruiser 165 L6, Do I need bellows adhesive on the upper bellows?

I am going through my 165 mercruisers (Chevy 250 L6, 4.1L). The manifolds and risers were rotted so I replaced them along with all the gaskets. Both shutters were missing so I am replacing those. The upper bellows are leaking around where they attach to the exhaust elbow. This is the bellows...

New Barr manifolds have loose chunks inside the water channels, L6, 165

I'm replacing the manifolds and risers on my twin Mercruiser 165's (1972). I got the first manifold off and over to the bench and was getting ready to swap over the carburetor brackets. When I unboxed the new manifold I heard some rattling inside. I tuned it over and a chunk of loose cast...

1972 Bertram refurb. Has Merc 165 L6's. Introduction

I guess an introduction is in order. I'm the new owner of a fairly well cared for somewhat un-mollested 1972 Bertram. I have been negotiating/waiting/surveying/buying it for 10 weeks but I finally made the 4 state trip this week to pick her up in Ohio and bring her back to NC. The boat has twin...
