Mercury Tempest, Turning Point Mach 3 or Michigan Wheel Apollo?

right now I am leaning Apollo in 21P. She would swing a 23P, but I rarely go that fast, so I am opting for the extra juice off the line. The lower pitch also provides for slower min planning speed. For some reason, my speedboat needs a lot of power to plane, but then will snap your neck...

    anchor line

Gee, about 6 years ago i bought 300' of 1/2 three strand nylon anchor line off the 'net for $40. It is much stronger and longer than I need for my 21 footer in the ocean. The quality is fine, and I do care if it is Asian or European.

    How to disconnect temperature sensor?

The last knife connector I saw was on my Fat-Fifty and early 60's Big Twin. How long did they use those?

    Family of 5, 19ft or 21ft?

Gee liability is a major concern for all manufacturers. Remember when Ford Explorers had those series of fatal rollovers during a crash? Ford was sued a whole lot. On a related note, remember when the Pinto's would pop into reverse on their own, back into something and explode? The...

DeWalt corded drill DW106 Type-2 keyless chuck, bits slipping out?

those battery powered drills are real convenient. unfortunately, when the battery fails, it drives me nuts. after tossing some of those drills, after a couple of years with bad batts, i stick with corded ones, as they last 20 years or so.

    Tilt ram piston removal

Gee, I looked it up (see diagram for random 2014 Merc 150). It does not look like it comes apart. It does look like you could replace the seals, without disassembly. Hope it helps. https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury/oem-parts/outboard/2014/1115f231d/power-trim-assembly-components

    Yamaha 115 anodes

Pulling the heads on a 2 cycle engine is an order of magnitude easier than pulling the head on a OHC 4 cycle engine. However, neither of these activities are part of a basic level of mechanical ability, IMO. That would be limited to spark plugs, fuel filters and gearoil, grease etc. To the...

DeWalt corded drill DW106 Type-2 keyless chuck, bits slipping out?

I have tossed out two drills with lousy chucks, in the last year or so. I live on the water, and if you are working on the dock and you drop something like the drill bit you need, it is gone. Life is too short for that. The hex shaft drill bits help keep the chuck tight a bit better.

    Family of 5, 19ft or 21ft?

SeaRay boats have more and better fittings, carpets, seats and other cosmetic items than Bayliner or other entry level boats. However, I do not think you can say that Bayliner construction and it's inherent safety is inferior to SeaRay. Liability laws make building Bayliner boats inferior...

    Family of 5, 19ft or 21ft?

Mark, although my '88 SeaRay hull handled real well. I suspect the boat was made on a Friday. The quality was really inconsistent. The deck was sprayed with a chop gun which is not unusual, but it looks like they ran out of chopped FG, 2/3 of the way thru, as the rear of the deck had only...

    Will a Merc '77 IL6 gearcase fit a '93 Merc V6

I have both of the subject gearcases on hand. I have always heard that the L6 gearcases would fit a V6. The driveshaft dia and splines seem to be the same. The driveshaft is a bit shorter than the V6. The L6 gearcase sems to be a bit different than the V6 gearcase, but by 1/8 to 1/4" as...

    Family of 5, 19ft or 21ft?

Gee, Here on Barnegat Bay, NJ, a 21 footer is a good choice, for the following reasons, IMO. A 21 footer is large enough to stand up to most of the normal conditions on the bay. The bay is 20+ miles long and about 3 mi wide. The 21 footer can usually take the extra wind and waves, when...

IMO the compression values are close enough to indicate the motor is good. I say run it.

    Kill Switch Lanyard

The Johnnyrudes of that era had a different kind of kill lanyard. When the lanyard is connected correctly, and you pull it, the button on the ign switch pops out and turns off the ign switch mechanically. Look for the small button (say less than 1/4") in the center of the kill switch...

Mercury Tempest, Turning Point Mach 3 or Michigan Wheel Apollo?

I currently am running a 21 or a 23 P 3 blade TP Hustler. The 23P prop is a bit faster, but not a lot, and it is a little slower out of the hole. Top speed is in the low 60's, or high 50's, with stock prop and set up. The TP props are OK, but it may be that the Apollo and Tempest are a bit...

    wall carpet replacement

I have used cleaning vinegar in the Windex dispensers. It was not as strong as the ammonia that is generally used, IMO. I think the mold will laugh at the vinegar. I am happy to be wrong.

    wall carpet replacement

Most boats use a marine carpet for places like that. Marine carpet fibers are some form of plastic, which doesn't stain easily and is pretty tough. They will normally hold up to gasoline and oil without damage. I would try some hydrogen peroxide and see if it kills the mold. Use it on some...

Wiring a 3 wire trim/tilt pump to throttle handle switch

Relays are used on 2 wire motors, as they are capable of reversing polarity. Relays provide ground to the PTT motor when not energized. When energized, relays provide power to the PTT motor. They typically use wires for secondary power, primary power, primary ground, secondary ground and...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Generally speaking, when cranking an outboard, the battery voltage should not go below 8.5VDC. It is not a hard and fast rule, but if your battery shows 7VDC when cranking, it is likely failing. In your case, 8VDC when cranking does not prove the battery is good or bad. If I were you, I would...
