Thanks. Got it on the charger now.

    RPM at cranking speed

from what I understand, the only real way to “test” the switch box is by eliminating the other components. I think the manual should preface the test by saying something like…do this test if engine runs.

    RPM at cranking speed

Hi All My 1996 40 hp Mariner Magnum has no spark. I’ve now got the shop manual and going through the diagnostic tests. I’ve tested each of the components and they all appear to be in spec. By process of elimination, this suggests the Switch Box is the issue (as the switch box itself can not be...

1996 Mariner 40 HP - starting procedure and more

Hi All, I recently bought a used 1996 (I think) 40 HP ELPTO (I think) Mercury Mariner. The serial number is hard to make out, but I believe it is OG403xxx. I know this has likely been asked a hundred times, but I'm not able to find it. Where can I download a users manual (not the repair...

Can not find Mercruiser steering cable replacement

I’m trying to find a replacement rack/pinion cable (ssc13415) for my Mercruiser (ya, still working on this) and can’t find one anywhere. At first I searched locally (help out local businesses) and no luck. Expanded to amazon, canada, USA, eBay and shops through out North America. No luck. I...

    Swivel Shaft replacement approach

I started this new thread specifically for the swivel shaft replacement as followup to my thread about the steering cable nut being stuck. I've removed the steering cable clevis pin but the sterndrive still does not swing left/right. Based on the suggestion from the earlier thread from...

Steering cable nut - how to remove

Well, I thought removing the cotter pin from the clevis pin on the steering cable was the tough part (isn’t that conveniently located!!!), but now I’m trying to remove the cable nut on the other end. Unfortunately when trying to unscrew it, the cylinder it is attached to also turns, preventing...

Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU

Boy, what a repair trip this has been! I just want to say thank you to those who have provided constant help to me. I am super appreciative. Things I have done since a near sinking of the boat. Not much of this could have been done without the help of the contributors of iBOATS. Exhaust bellow...

    Electronic Float switch test

I think other than the trim setting, my last hurdle before attempting to go out tomorrow is the bulge pump. I'm trying to test an electronic float switch. Is this as simple as testing testing any other switch? Check for continuity when the float is up verse down?

    Trim setting procedure

I found a post from a while back (think it was from chrisa) on the procedures for setting the trim on an Alpha one Gen 2. It had these two pages. I'm stuck on the first step  . It says "rotate the sender until the needle is at the bottom of the arc". Does that mean using the control on...

Can someone confirm if this is the right fuse for a Mercruiser 4.3 starter? 88-79023A91

    Adhesive and the bellows

Sorry to bring this up again. I've read a bunch of posts about adhesive and want to summarize my understanding. (as I noted in another post, I'm nervous for the next few steps. I can't imagine taking this apart again if I've done something wrong!) U-joint and exhaust bellows: 1. Use acetone to...

    Alpha One Gen 2 alignment

I've installed the new gimbal bearing and now doing the alignment check. I've watched a few videos and know that I should be able to slide the alignment tool out easily with two fingers. (as you can see from the video, I'm not there). Before I go messing around with the engine, I wanted to make...

    Broken gear oil connector

So, I did exactly what Chris warned me to be careful not to do, I broke the needle on the gear oil connector (through the transom) while attempting to do a bellows and bearing replacement. I understand it is a clip type connection in the engine compartment that holds the hose to the connector...

Found this in my LU today

Hi All, I was in the process of finishing an impeller replacement on Alpha 1 Gen two and found this item in my LU (where my finger is pointing). Could someone let me know what it is? Thanks!

How to remove gear oil tube from bell housing

I’m in the “easy” process of tear down to replace the bellows and gimbal bearing on Alpha one Gen II. Is there a trick to removing the gear oil tube from the bell housing? I’ve removed the clamp but am unable to remove the tube (worried about pulling too hard and breaking something) Thanks

    Exhaust bellow types

As I'm doing all the work after my submerged engine fiasco I decided to replace the bellows. After opening the new bellows kit package I realized I got a different exhaust bellow than what was originally on. I'm assuming this is alternate version that doesn't exhaust through the outdrive? Is...

Purging Trim Lines from Alpha 1 Gen 2

This is a more specific question regarding trim purge as part of my "What to do after nearly sunk" thread. My mercruiser, alpha 1 gen 2 flooded with water. The trim pump and reservoir where underwater. Below are the steps I've gleamed from other posts on how to purge the old oil (As since being...

What to do after nearly sunk?

i did a dumb move. Pulled the boat about a month ago with the intention of going back the next weekend to close up. Problem is that I left the front bimini with off, the drain plug in and didn’t come back for a month. A total n of rain later and the engine compartment is flooded more than half...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 Gimbal Puller

I'm not sure if I'm double posting, but I can't find the post I thought I submitted, so trying again. I have a hammer puller with a not too good set of claws. Been trying for hours but not luck. I'm in the Toronto area. Any help would really be appreciated! Thanks, Tim
