Going from 25 hp to 35 hp

I don't know if it is advisable, but in that situation I've always wondered it trying a small kicker 3-4 hp, would be enough to get up on plane, and then the kicker can just be killed and pulled up. It might be a way to see if a 5hp jump in size will do what you're thinking before...

    1973 4hp Evinrude

got a proper gasket. the hand cut one looked like it sealed decent when I took it off. I pulled the flywheel and used a piece of glass to resurface the cylinder block a little bit, cleaned it all up and installed fresh head gasket. ran in a bucket for a while, seemed pretty good. doesn't...

    Johnson stops dead!

only time I've ever seen a motor just cut out, it is electrical. like if it goes out like someone hit a kill switch. and everytime a loose or bad connection. failed kill or key switch, or anywhere you can just have a bad/failing connection.

    Aluminum Utility Boat Selection Help

I've been looking at used listings for a couple months and getting familiar with 14-16 foot v-hull utulity boats, the old classic style with just bench seats accross. I have a project skiff on a trailer and a 2005 25hp Merc with a 20" shaft sitting on it, but I don't want to take the time and...

    1973 4hp Evinrude

ran good. I got impatient and just cut a high temp paper gasket. good enough for a test run. I'll check the head again for leaking when I swap it. There's a couple gouges in the head, and a nick/chunk out of one of the corners, those may prevent a good seal. I forgot to take a picture of...

    Black plug

was it working before or is this a new set up?

1972 Evinrude 40 outboard no spark?

how good is the ground? I'd add a jumper wire off wherever you grounded it to a really nice bare metal spot, maybe a common ground with other connections.

1972 Evinrude 40 outboard no spark?

put an ohm meter on your points. check that they pass current when closed, with very litte to no resistance, and they do not pass any current at all when open. my guess is this won't work correctly, and when you pick up the feeler guage you should pick up a points file as well.

    1973 4hp Evinrude

https://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1973&hp=4&model=4336C&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=MAGNETO part #26, yea - it just rides on the support plate, you have to kind of angle it correctly, when tightening the clamp for the plug wire that it shares a bolt with when...

    1973 4hp Evinrude

I'll have to find time to test it to be sure, but if nobody knows what that ground strap is supposed to do, or how to install it, I think I've figured it out. It definitely connects/grounds the armature/magneto plate, to the armature support ring which is grounded to the frame. So, that ground...

    1973 4hp Evinrude

no idea. found a few old threads where it comes up, here's one. they didn't work through and find a conclusion on it. https://forums.iboats.com/threads/1972-johnson-4hp-no-spark.548021/

    1973 4hp Evinrude

I'm not sure. Maybe that is the ignition cut off, and it grounds the magneto when the throttle is closed far enough? So, it might be the ignition kill switch when the throttle is in the right postion?

    1970 Evinrude 18hp Trottle issue

I just did this exact same thing with my digital. I couldn't get any ohms reading off the 2ndary coil. I had to adjust the range, just click through each range, and see what hits. I think it was the 20k range worked. Once that worked it made sense too, since the readings were 4,000 ohms...

    1970 Evinrude 18hp Trottle issue

I'd put points and condensers in it just to rule that out. When you checked the head, did you use a straight edge? I did one a while ago and by eye it looked fine, but it was very much not flat when checking with a straight edge. Easy job to hone it, took like 30 minutes.

    1973 4hp Evinrude

I think one of the 15hp Evinrude/Johnson motors they made from like 64-92, is what I'm going to try to get my hands on. or a couple, we'll see. So many motors so little time.

    1973 4hp Evinrude

apparently that piece is a grounding strip, so says parts diagram for a 12 foot rowboat, I like the 3 and 4hp, works on a 14 fine. to plane, for me and another, I think I need a 15hp to make that work if the boat is semi-v and about 200lbs, looking to pick one up. What is a CD 5.5? I have an...

    1973 4hp Evinrude

I took the magneto plate off the parts motor. Eventually figured out how to test ohms on the coil and they both test good. Eventually, I'm gonna want to snip some coil wire and put in new. The routing of the cables messes with my head. And the plugs pointing to the left just makes the run...

    1973 4hp Evinrude

I had to mess with my voltmeter. It doesn't auto sense the rage, so - getting the 2ndary winding to light up with any reading took a bit. Looks like the 2 coils I looked at tonight are in spec my meter is wierd. the scale for ohms goes 200 2000 20k 200k 2000k which maybe makes sense, but...

    1973 4hp Evinrude

I'll probably order some ignition parts. I think this ignition is running pretty good. I went over it again, and took my time a bit more, and far as I can tell, looks good. Nice blue spark, gap set correctly, cleaned points. I did get out an ohm meter and do some continuity testing, but...

    1973 4hp Evinrude

that's perfect. I actually got a minute to do this operation and it was off. I can't say it made it run any better or different, but - now I know exactly the poition that throttle should be in to be in the start position. The stickers indicating start/run are long gone. Knowing where that...
