Are wheel locks the way to go?

Seems to me that any trailer coupler lock can be easily defeated by the thief bringing his own chain and chaining the the tongue to his vehicle's ball. Proven Industries and Leaf make wheel locks that go around the leaf spring, through a hole in the tire's rim and secured with a puck lock. Is...

What kind of bolts for aluminum handles?

Texasmark, flashback and Scott, Thanks for your research and suggestions. Since flashback mentioned that most fasteners on aluminum masts are stainless steel and they hold up fairly well, maybe stainless steel bolts for my duck boat handles might not be so bad. Thinking about this before...

What kind of bolts for aluminum handles?

Getting close to completion of a new build wooden jon boat. The outside of the hull is fiberglassed using epoxy resin. The boat will be used in salt water. I bought aluminum duck boat handles, two for the bow and 2 for the transom. The handles will be mounted near the top of the bow plate...

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

OK. Since folks here said their bunks are short "vertical" 2x4's (like 3 feet), I'll skip the horizontal 2x6 bunks and go with horizontal 2x4 bunks. I know that cedar 2x4's are available in my area so I'll look for two of the hardest straight cedar 2x4's for my bunks. Hardest so the staples...

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

Thanks for posting the pics. I bought a 6 HP outboard for my 12 foot jon boat. Will be going at trolling speeds when traveling to try to catch some fish. So will be going at displacement speeds.

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

OK, will use cedar for horizontal bunk supported by pressure treated vertical 2x4. Thanks.

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

I really appreciate your taking the time to help me out. Does your boat pictured have longitudinal 1x4's on the bottom? My flat bottom jon boat only has the 3/8" plywood bottom with chine logs on the sides. No keel or longitudinal 1x4's for the bottom.

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

I don't mind the extra cost or work to convert to flat 2x6 bunks. Can't hurt and more peace of mind for a novice like me. Another consideration is that the bottom of my boat will extend over the trailer's fenders so I'll have to have the top of the bunks at least 1" higher than the top of...

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

Tall vertical side guide posts are definitely on my to do list. I'll need them to be able to be able to gauge the rear of the trailer when backing up and also to know where the trailer sits in the water when loading. Thanks for the link to the roller style guide posts. I'll check them out.

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

Yes, it is a very light trailer. I posted a picture of the trailer in my response to JimS123.

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

Don't want small points of roller contact on the 3/8" plywood bottom of my jon boat. Trailer I bought is the cheapest EZ Loader trailer and it looks like this one: . . My boat is already built and I'm painting it now. So adding keels are not an option for me. Thanks.

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

I think you're right about fillets not being necessary. I'll just glue and screw. I don't remember seeing untreated 2x4 or 2x6 pine lumber at Home Depot, Lowes or other local lumber stores in my area. Lots of treated lumber though. I have bought redwood and cedar 2x4's for fence building in...

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

It's a self-built wooden jon boat, not aluminum. Trailer is galvanized. No cypress available in my area.

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

Amazing to me as a first time boat trailer owner. Learn something new every day. Thanks.

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

That configuration is exactly what I was thinking about. But I was wondering if 5.5" wide bunk supported by 1.5" of a 2x4 on edge would work. Your suggestion pretty much confirms that it will work. What do you think of this procedure: Use pressure treated 2x4's and 2x6's, all 8 feet long...

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

Wow, that is unreal. Only two 2x4x3' bunks on edge and one keel roller. Do those short bunks extend beyond the transom?

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

It's a self-built wooden flat bottom jon boat that does not have a keel. Just a 3/8" thick plywood bottom with 5 frames. No V bottom on the boat for keel rollers. Why? Googling "2x4 or 2x6 bunk boards", the general consensus was to go with flat 2x6 for better support. Plus I like the idea...

Converting from vertical 2x4 to horizontal 2x6 bunks

The new EZ Loader trailer that I'm buying (did not receive it yet) comes with bunk brackets that are 1.5 inches wide. The two 2x4 bunks are mounted vertically in the brackets so only 1.5" widths support the boat. My boat is a flat bottom jon boat and I want two 2x6 bunks with the 5.5 inch...

    Bunks with plastic on top

Thanks for the link. Are staples with a 1/4 inch crown wide enough to hold carpets on bunks? I see that the commonly use staple is the T50 size that has a 10mm crown (a little over 3/8"). I already have a 1/4" pneumatic staple gun.
