    War with lower unit

Re: War with lower unit As for the water pump, something didn't sit right with me about this so I started looking for OEM pictures of the original. It looks to me like a chunk of plastic from the pump housing has melted down into the pump around the drive shaft, though if so it left a...

    War with lower unit

Re: War with lower unit Update: I got the shift shaft separated and it cleaned up pretty well except for the splines on what seems to be the smaller stainless(?) section. How can I protect what's left of these? what's the best anti-seize application for us on this coupler?

    Adding Power Trim

Re: Adding Power Trim I switched out the one on the right with the one on the left. Aside from the swivel & brackets, the rest of the mount is entirely different.

    War with lower unit

Re: War with lower unit Ahhh thanks Gerry, for a while I was thinking the gearbox needed some odd lock to keep it in reverse, but that makes more sense. LOL Thanks for the suggestion Maxz and in fact everyone. I think I will try and pull the whole rod out. It looks like the attachment on the...

    War with lower unit

Re: War with lower unit OK so although I'm not %100 certain what I'm seeing here, it appears as though the shift shaft is indeed seized up hard. There is a lot of spline beneath the coupling which makes me think I've not yet pulled it up through, but I'm not certain. Heres a couple of pics...

    War with lower unit

I've started attempting a lower unit rebuild on a 1975 Merc 850. I've read a bunch of related threads and was prepared for a struggle with the probability that the drive shaft is corroded to the crank. It came down around 1/4" and then stopped. Using the wedging principal, some elbow grease and...

    Lower unit question

Hi folks, long time lurker first time poster here. I have I believe, a 1976 4cyl Merc 850 Canadian serial number 7071854. The lower unit is leaking like a sieve and there is a local 1982 50HP 4cyl available quite cheaply because the power head is shot but lower is OK. Is there ANY chance this...

    Lower Unit Shims

Hi all. I'm working to build one lower unit from two, and have two older style (Chrysler) Force lower units from I believe to be 125HP's. I've read a great thread on the disassembly of those, with great input from Frank, but he spoke of shims under the upper bearing on the drive shaft (single...
