Best Method for loosening stuck bolts.

I couldn't get the bolt red hot with my butane torch. Nor could i grip the remaining Flange with longnose ViseGrips. Flange was too thin. Any small grinder that was small enough to access removed material at a snail's pace. As a last resort i did discover my cordless drill (smaller housing...

Can the rubber be revived by spraying with silicone spray over a period of several days? Or is it "too far gone"?

going to the dark side - repower

I am interested. My BIL has an old OMC that he asked me to revive. It is much older and larger than the OMC's i have worked on. Motor is near Mathews VA. Can you post or PM me the shop's contact info? Thanks...

Best Method for loosening stuck bolts.

Photo showing broken Bolt remaining Flange in back at left, Hex nubbin in middle, and a good Flanged Bolt to the right.

Best Method for loosening stuck bolts.

Good idea to weld a nut on top of the remaining Bolt Flange as this would allow Back-and-Forth method. Also good idea to use a lot of heat from a oxy/acetylene torch. Unfortunately I'm not sure I have any way to get access to either a welder or a torch (a friend of mine in last town we lived in...

1985 Evinrude 6 hp long shaft lower unit removal

Newvintageusa, these are great motors that make an excellent father/son learning experience. For an excellent source for DIY info on these and other small HP Evinrude/Johnson motors google "Leeroy's Ramblings".

Best Method for loosening stuck bolts.

Scott, thanks for this info. This is the level of detail that is really helpful to me. I moved in April...have a friend in our previous town that has a "blue wrench"...and he is always willing to help.

Best Method for loosening stuck bolts.

Not a great photo but the the broken-off Hex Head portion of the Bolt is lying to the left. The Bolt with Flange still attached is to the right. The Flange is likely not thick enough to grab with Visegrips, if i can even access...

Best Method for loosening stuck bolts.

Well, I had 50% success. On the first bolt I used lots of heat from heat gun, applied penetrant, let it soak, let it cool, reheated/repeated several times over a period of 2 hours or so. Also peened the head to vibrate and aid penetrant movement. Then I applied CRC Freeze Off for around 20...

    BE8BACDE exploded view diagrams needed.

Racerone, sorry but I just now realized that I never responded to your Reply about your freighter lifeboat outboard. That is some cool history. If some of these older outboards could talk they would tell some interesting stories about the journeys that got them to their present location. Thanks.

Best Method for loosening stuck bolts.

Thanks Chris. I will try spraying after heating and the loosen/retighten trick. BTW thinking about this some more, it seems if I accidentally shear one or both the of the Bolts off then I will be able to slip/pry (depending on bond strength of Exhaust Gasket) the powerhead off of the Lower...

Best Method for loosening stuck bolts.

A couple weeks ago I busted off a stainless Head Bolt while investigating low compression on an engine. Luckily the other 5 Head Bolts came off with no problem (I had soaked all 6 Bolts with penetrant, but didn't use propane torch to heat the Head). So I was able to lift off the head, penetrant...

Upper Water Tube Grommet Replacement 6hp 1985.

Vic, thanks for clarifying and thanks for the link. Where is the best source for Model specific OEM manuals? I only ever had an aftermarket manual and i found it to be of little use so i resold it. CT1762, I like your idea on how to use an aftermarket manual --it would have been less work than...

Upper Water Tube Grommet Replacement 6hp 1985.

I don't have a Manual for this model. I can tell that the Exhaust Gasket 330564 and the Water Tube Grommet were assembled "dry" (i.e. no Sealant) in this motor. However, dry might not be correct. Does anybody have a Manual that can tell me whether Sealant is required? Also, if Sealant is...

Upper Water Tube Grommet Replacement 6hp 1985.

Thanks Oldboat. Also any problem with my tank setup would not explain the fact that water (along with exhaust fumes) is leaking from an area where leaking should not occur. With any luck at all i will have new parts installed and do a real on-the-water test jn about a week....will then post...

Upper Water Tube Grommet Replacement 6hp 1985.

Oldboat, thanks for the input. Unfortunately I already disassembled much further than you advised but no harm done (I think) it should be a good learning experience for me. Can you explain(or send a photo) of what you mean by running over a barrel edge? Are you saying that I might be fixing a...

Upper Water Tube Grommet Replacement 6hp 1985.

One additional note...it appears i am missing one Silencer Pad #100 p/n 327030, only 1 is present--exhaust soot buildup on side opposite of this photo indicates the 2nd Silencer Pad has been missing for a long time. The diagram calls for qty=2. Are 2 (or even 1) really necessary? What would...

Upper Water Tube Grommet Replacement 6hp 1985.

I removed the head and did see Upper Water Tube Grommet #75 p/n 330436(see photos). The Gromment still makes an airtight seal around the Water Tube. However it is hard to say whether this Grommet is sealing properly against the Gasket #91. So I will replace this Grommet and Gasket #91 p/n...
